SUBHASHITHANI:659
Enmity
never ends in this world by countering enmity with enmity. Its end is possible
only by behaving in harmony and not enmity, this is the eternal Dharma.
Bhadram bhadramiti brooyaadbhadramityeva vaa vadet.
Shushkavairam Vivede cha na kuryaatkenac itsaha.
One should always speak pleasantly and in a friendly
manner and never use harsh and foul language. If per chance
he has to say something unpleasant, he should use cultured
and polite language, and should never have enmity and
disputes without any ground with others.
People
show contempt towards the soft and gentle persons and are agitated by the rude
persons. Thus, giving up that pair of attitudes, one should resort to neutral
behaviour.
Extreme of anger, harsh speech, poverty, enmity with relatives,
association with evil men, service of people from not so good a family –
these are the marks of people living in Hell.
We
know that in the past gambling was cause of intense enmity. Thus, a wise man
should never indulge in the gambling, not even for the purpose of
entertainment.
Never should love, friend,
and antagonism from the wicked, because it is like coal which burns us if it is
hot and blackens the body when it is cold.
indriyāṇi
purā jitvā jitan tribhuvanaṃ tvayā।
smaradbhiriva tadvairamindriyaireva nirjitaḥ॥
In the
past, by performing a great penance, you
conquered the senses and conquered the three worlds.
Now, as if revenging that enmity, those very senses conquered you.
(Mandodari comment on Ravana
post his death)
