Only
he can be considered a dheera ( a person of courage) whose mind is not
disturbed or overcome by emotions even in the presence of objects of
temptation.

The ignorant make a great effort to practice
one-pointedness and the stopping of thought, while the wise see nothing to be
done and remain in themselves like those asleep.॥18.33॥

While churning the ocean for nectar, Gods were not pleased with
gems secured from ocean. Nor did they entertain fear when they secured the
terrible poison. They churned the ocean until they got nectar. Thus persons
with determination do not swerve from their goal.

The following are the
comments of Swami Vivekananda on this sloka, which incidentally appears in both Mundaka upanisad 1.2.8 and
Katopanisad 1.2.5 :
There are still greater dangers in
regard to the transmitter, the Guru. There are many who, though immersed
in ignorance, yet, in the pride of their hearts, fancy they know everything,
and not only do not stop there, but offer to take others on their shoulders;
and thus the blind leading the blind, both fall into the ditch.
— "Fools dwelling in darkness,
wise in their own conceit, and puffed up with vain knowledge, go round and
round staggering to and fro, like blind men led by the blind." — (Katha
Up., I. ii. 5). The world is full of these. Every one wants to be a teacher,
every beggar wants to make a gift of a million dollars! Just as these beggars
are ridiculous, so are these teachers.

The strong minded ones once having put in efforts do not turn back till
they have achieved their objective.

Persons who are brave, industrious and with firm
determination , are not
deterred by not having wealth, pleasure and fame in society or by other road blocks
being faced by them, and by adhering to their commitment proceed with the work taken in hand by them.

The strong minded will not faint, even when all is lost; the elephant stands firm, even when wounded by a shower of arrows.
