NASHTAM-नष्टं - LOSS

 SUBHASHITHANI:488

naṣṭaṃ dravyaṃ labhyate kaṣṭasādhyam
naṣṭā vidyā labhyate’bhyāsayuktā|
naṣṭārogyaṃ sūpacāraiḥ susādhyam
naṣṭā velā yā gatā sā gataiva..

Wealth lost can be recovered through hard work/efforts.
Knowledge lost (forgotten) can be regained through proper practice/study. Lost health can be re-attained through medicines and treatment; However, time that has gone past, is lost forever!

For that which is lost, dead or has passed - the intelligent do not bemoan.  It is deemed that is the difference between the intelligent and the foolish.

Ku bhojyena dinam nashtam kukalathrena sharvari.
Ku putrena kulam nashtam tannashtam yanna deeyate.
By taking bad food whole day will be lost, the night will be lost due to abrasive wife, whole family will be lost due to a bad son; In the same way, one who does not give charity will lose his wealth.

Na apraapyam abhivaanchanti nashtam nechanti shochitum I
They that do not aspire for objects unattainable, nor wish to bewail over what is lost, nor are dismayed in adversities, they have the intellect of a 'Man of Wisdom'.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

Having fasted on an Ekadashi which had Dashami at the beginning, Gandhari lost all her hundred sons. Therefore, Viddhi Ekadashi must be avoided.

Excessive generosity lead to the taming of Maha Bali. Excessive pride lead to the downfall of Suyodhana. Excessive infatuation lead to the destruction of Ravana. Thus, excess should be avoided in every aspect.

Just as an object that falls into the sea is destroyed, so what is said to a person who does not listen to anyone is lost. the scriptures are lost to one who has no self-control, the sacrifice( homam) done without fire is useless.

Gataanu gatiko lokah na lokah paaramaarthikah
Gangasaikata lingena nashtam me tamra bhajanam
People in general follow what others do with out questioning the reason; a pilgrim lost his copper vessel on the banks ganges.

Explanation: On a Shivaratri day a person went to a sea for holy bath with a copper vessel. He had hidden the vessel under sand Shiva Lingam so that it will not be lost while he was bathing. But numerous others, thinking that on that day they should all make sand lingams made such lingams and placed by the side of the first sand lingam. By the time the person came out of sea there were many lingams and he could not place his copper vessel.
