अज्ञः
सुखमाराध्यः सुखतरमाराध्यते विशेषज्ञः ।
ज्ञानलवदुर्विदग्धं
ब्रह्मापि नरं न रञ्जयति ॥ -3
agyaH sukhamArAdhyaH sukhataram ArAdhyate visheShagyah|
GyanalavadurvigdhaM brahmApi naraM na ranjayati || 3||
It is easy to explain an ignorant person. Easier to explain a scholar. Even the creator cannot explain to a person of a little knowledge suffering from pride.
प्रहस्य मणिमुद्धरेन्मकरवक्रदंष्ट्रान्तरात्
समुद्रमपि सन्तरेत्प्रचलदूर्मिमालाकुलम् ।
भुजङ्गमपि कोपितं शिरसि पुष्पवद्धारये
न्न तु प्रतिनिविष्टमूर्खजनचित्तमाराधयेत् ॥4
With courage, we
could extract the pearl stuck in between crooked teeth of a crocodile. We could
sail across an ocean that is tormented by huge waves. We may even be able to
wear an angry snake on our head as if it were a flower. However it is
impossible to satisfy an obstinate fool.
लभेत सिकतासु तैलमपि यत्नतः पीडयत्
पिबेच्च मृगतृष्णिकासु सलिलं पिपासार्दितः ।
कदाचिदपि पर्यटञ्छशविषाणमासादयेत्
न तु प्रतिनिविष्टमूर्खजनचित्तमाराधयेत् ॥5
If enough effort is put in, we can
extract oil by squeezing sand. You may be able to drink water at a mirage. It
is also possible to even spot a rabbit with horns while roaming around the
world. However it is impossible to get a prejudiced fool to see logic.
व्यालं
बालमृणालतन्तुभिरसौ रोद्धुं समुज्जृम्भते
छेत्तुं वज्रमणीञ्छिरीषकुसुमप्रान्तेन सन्नह्यते
।
माधुर्यं
मधुबिन्दुना रचयितुं क्षाराम्बुधेरीहते
नेतुं वाञ्छति यः खलान्पथि सतां सूक्तैः सुधास्यन्दिभिः
॥[6]
vyAlaM bAlamRRiNAlatantubhirasau roddhuM samujjRRimbhate
ChettuM vajramaNIM shirIShakusumaprAntena sannahyati
|
mAdhuryaM madhubindunA rachayituM kShArAmbudherIhate
netuM vA~nChati yaH khalAnpathi satAM sUktaiH
sudhAsyandibhiH || 6||
He
who wishes to lead the wicked fool into the path of the virtuous by sweet
persuasive language is like one who endeavours to curb a maddened elephant by
means of tender lotus filaments, like one who tries to cut the diamond with the
edge of the Shirisha flower, or like one
who hopes to sweeten the salt waters of the ocean by means of a drop of honey.
शिरः शार्वं स्वर्गात्पशुपतिशिरस्तः क्षितिधरं
महीध्रादुत्तुङ्गादवनिमवनेश्चापि जलधिम् ।
अधोऽधो गङ्गेयं पदमुपगता स्तोकमथवा
विवेकभ्रष्टानां भवति विनिपातः शतमुखः ॥[10]

The Ganges falls from Heaven on the
Head of Lord Shiva, from the head of Shiva to the mountain, from that lofty
mountain to the earth. From there, she descends on the lower plains. Once she
is in the plains, she continues seeking the lower and lower land until she
finally reaches the sea. This is what idiots do with their life. They tend to
take the path of least resistance to reach the lowest level possible.
शक्यो वारयितुं जलेन हुतभुक् छत्रेण सूर्यातपो
नागेन्द्रो निशिताङ्कुशेन समदौ दण्डेन गोगर्धभौ ।
व्याधिर्भेषजसंग्रहैश्च विविधैर्मन्त्रप्रयोगैर्विषं
सर्वस्यौषधमस्ति शास्त्रविहितं मूर्खस्य नास्त्यौषधम् ॥[11]

sarvasyauShadhamasti shAstravihitaM mUrkhasya nAstyauShadham

Fire can be quenched by water, the
heat of the sun can be avoided by holding up an umbrella, a wild elephant can
be controlled by a sharp hook, a bull or a donkey by a stick; illness (can be
got over) by taking medicines in the proper way, and poison can be eradicated
by the use of various charms. A remedy has been ordained by the Shastras for
everything, but there is no medicine for a fool.
वरं पर्वतदुर्गेषु
भ्रान्तं वनचरैः सह ।
न मूर्खजनसम्पर्कः
सुरेन्द्रभवनेष्वपि ॥[14]
varaM parvatadurgeShu bhrAntaM vanacharaiH saha |
na mUrkhajanasamparkaH surendrabhavaneShvapi || 14||
It is better to roam with the wild beasts in
dense forest and difficult mountains than to live in the mansions of Lord Of
the gods Indra in company of a fool.
