वैद्यराज
नमस्तुभ्यम् यमराजसहोदर !
यमस्तु
हरति प्राणान् वैद्यः प्राणान् धनानि च ॥
ब्राह्मणा
गणका वैध्या सारमेयाश्च कुकुटाः
शरीरे झर्झरीभूते व्याधिग्रस्ते कलेवरे |
औषधं जाह्नवीतोयं वैद्यो नारायणो हरिः ||"
"sharIre jharjharIbhUte vyAdhigraste kalevare |
auShadhaM jAhnavItoyaM vaidyo nArAyaNo hariH ||"
"When the sharIra (body) is suffering and the body is beset with disease, medicine is like the sacred water of the Ganga and the doctor is naaraayana Himself". ( There are many other meanings attributed to this sloka )
धनिकः
श्रोत्रियो राजा नदी वैद्यस्तु पञ्चमः।
पञ्च यत्र न विद्यन्ते न तत्र दिवसे वसेत ॥Chanakya

Dhanikah shrothriyo raajaa nadee vaidhyastu
panchamah I
Pancha yatra na vidhyante na tatra divase vaseta II
One should not stay at a place where
there no money lender ( bank) ,a vedic scholar, a king, a physician (doctor ) ,
and a river even for a day.
vaidhyarAja namaH tubhyaM yamarAjasahodara |
yamaH tu harati prANAm vaidhyarAjaH dhanAni cha ||
O Doctor, I salute you! You are the
brother of Yama Raja!
While Yama only takes the life, the
doctor takes the money too!
चितां
प्रज्वलितां दृष्ट्वा वैद्यो विस्मयमागतः ।
नाहं
गतः न मे भ्राता कस्यैदं हस्तलाघवं ॥
chitAM prajvalitAM dRuShTvA vaidyo vismayamAgataH |
nAhaM gataH na me bhrAtA kasyaidaM hastalAghavaM ||
Seeing a body burning on a pyre, a
doctor remarks in surprise:
"He is gone not by me, or by my
brother, then whose sleight of hand is this?"
वैद्यानां
शारदी माता पिता च कुसुमाकर: ।
यमदंष्ट्रा
स्वसा प्रोक्ता हितभुक् मितभुक् रिपु: ॥
Vaidhyaanaam shaaradee maataa pita cha kusumakarah I
Yamadamshtra svasaa proktaa hita bhuk mita bhuk
ripuh II
During rainy season it is common for
diseases to spread and hence it is called the mother of doctors, the spring
season is conducive to spread them more and hence it is termed as the father,
the teeth of Yama is considered as their sister, and those who have (a healthy and light diet) good
health and hence don’t need their attention are called enemies.
रोगस्योपक्रमे
सान्त्वं मध्ये किञ्चिद्धनव्यय: ।
शनैरनादर:
शान्तौ स्नातो वैद्यं न पश्यति ॥
Rogaasyopakrame saantvam madhye kinchiddhanavyayah I
Shaanair ranaadarah shaanto snaato vaidhyam na
pasyati II
During early stages of sickness, men
show respect to the doctor; when further treatment is necessary they even give
money to him; once the sickness is cured they start avoiding him; once fully
cured they forget him totally.
अव्याकरणमधीतं
भिन्नद्रोण्या तरंगिणीतरणम् |
भेषजमपथ्यसहितं त्रयमिदमकॄतं वरं न कॄतं ||
भेषजमपथ्यसहितं त्रयमिदमकॄतं वरं न कॄतं ||
Learning
without grammar (i.e. not learning fundamentals), crossing river using boat
which has a hole, and consuming medicines without following the instructions of
the physician, better not to do these three things rather than doing them this
way. It is advisable not to do something rather than doing it improperly.
दृष्ट मात्रेणकुप्यन्ति न जाने तस्य
कारणम्Brahmana Ganaka Vaidhyaa Saarmeyascha Kukuttah
Drashtamaatrena Kupyanti Na Jaane Tasya Kaaranam.
Brahmins, astrologers(Ganak), physicians, dogs (Saarmeya), and Cocks (Kukutta), become angry merely on being looked upon, and nobody knows the reason for such a behaviour.

भैषज्यं
तु यथाकामं पथ्यं तु कठिनं वदेत् ।
आरोग्यं
दैवमाहात्म्यात् अन्यथात्वमपश्यत: ॥
Bhaishajyam tu yathaa kaamam pathyam tu katinam
vadet I
Aarogyam daivamaahaamyaat anyathaatvamapasyatah II
When a patient comes to a doctor he
should prescribe medicines as he feels necessary. But along with he should
prescribe a very strict diet ( pathyam) . If due to god’s grace he becomes
normal, all is well. If for any reason he is not cured he can always blame that the patient has not followed the diet properly.
षडेते
ह्यवमन्यन्ते नित्यं पूर्वोपकारिणं
आचार्यं
शिक्षिताः शिष्याः कृतदाराश्च मातरम् ।
नारीं
विगतकामास्तु कृतार्थाश्च प्रयोजकम्
नावं
निस्तीर्णकान्तारा आतुराश्च चिकित्सकम् ॥Vidura niti
The following six people are known to
forget those who helped them before - students forgetting their teachers,
daughters forgetting about mothers after marrying, a mendicant who has no
interest in sensual pleasures forgetting the ladies who gave him pleasures, any
beneficiary of help forgetting the benefactor, people forgetting the boatman
after crossing the river and patients forgetting about the doctor after being
treated.
धर्मस्यार्थस्य
कामस्य नृलोकस्योभयस्य च|
दाता
सम्पद्यते वैद्यो दानाद्देहसुखायुषाम्|| (Char. Samh. 16. 38)[6]
By virtue of his aptitude to bestow physical
happiness and longevity the physician is regarded as the donor of virtue,
wealth and desires belonging to this mundane world and the world eternal.
