What does Samatva mean?
Samatva is an
abstract concept in Hinduism that encompasses a state of equanimity, equality,
indifference or uniformity. The term comes from the Sanskrit root word, sama,
meaning "equal." –
The nature of the
mind is to be elated in success and dejected in failure. But by remaining unperturbed
by either, the mind gains clarity and firmness. It is like the surface of water
that has become placid and fit to reflect objects clearly. This even-mindedness
is equilibrium. He is a yogi who keeps the mind in this poised state under all
circumstances. Spiritual growth is possible to him only who keeps the mind ever

साधुष्वपि च पापेषु समबुद्धिर्विशिष्यते ||BG6.9||
suhṛin-mitrāryudāsīna-madhyastha-dveṣhya-bandhuṣhu
sādhuṣhvapi cha pāpeṣhu sama-buddhir viśhiṣhyate
He stands supreme who has equal regard
for friends, companions, enemies, neutrals, arbiters, the hateful, the
relatives, saints and sinners.
विद्याविनयसम्पन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि |
शुनि चैव श्वपाके च पण्डिता: समदर्शिन: || BG5.18||
vidyā-vinaya-sampanne
brāhmaṇe gavi hastini
śhuni chaiva
śhva-pāke cha paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśhinaḥ
The truly learned, with the eyes of
divine knowledge, see with equal vision a Brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog,
and a dog-eater.
आत्मौपम्येन
सर्वत्र समं पश्यति योऽर्जुन |
सुखं
वा यदि वा दु:खं स योगी परमो मत: || BG6.32||
ātmaupamyena sarvatra samaṁ
paśhyati
yo ’rjuna
sukhaṁ
vā
yadi vā
duḥkhaṁ
sa yogī
paramo mataḥ
I regard them to be perfect yogis who
see the true equality of all living beings and respond to the joys and sorrows
of others as if they were their own.
यो मां पश्यति सर्वत्र सर्वं च मयि पश्यति |
तस्याहं न प्रणश्यामि स च मे न प्रणश्यति || BG6.30||
yo māṁ paśhyati sarvatra sarvaṁ cha mayi paśhyati
tasyāhaṁ na praṇaśhyāmi sa cha me na praṇaśhyati
For those who see me everywhere and
see all things in me, I am never lost, nor are they ever lost to me.
यं हि न व्यथयन्त्येते पुरुषं पुरुषर्षभ |
समदु:खसुखं धीरं सोऽमृतत्वाय कल्पते || BG2.15||
yaṁ hi na
vyathayantyete puruṣhaṁ puruṣharṣhabha
sama-duḥkha-sukhaṁ
dhīraṁ so ’mṛitatvāya kalpate
O
Arjun, noblest amongst men, that person who is not affected by happiness and
distress, and remains steady in both, becomes eligible for liberation
योगस्थ: कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय |
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्यो: समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते ||BG2. 48||
yoga-sthaḥ
kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya
siddhy-asiddhyoḥ
samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga uchyate
Be
steadfast in the performance of your duty, O Arjuna, abandoning attachment to
success and failure. Such equanimity is called Yoga.
समदु:खसुख: स्वस्थ: समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चन: |
तुल्यप्रियाप्रियो धीरस्तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुति: ||BG14. 24||
मानापमानयोस्तुल्यस्तुल्यो मित्रारिपक्षयो: |
सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी गुणातीत: स उच्यते || BG14.25||
sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ
sva-sthaḥ sama-loṣhṭāśhma-kāñchanaḥ
tulya-priyāpriyo
dhīras tulya-nindātma-sanstutiḥ
mānāpamānayos
tulyas tulyo mitrāri-pakṣhayoḥ
sarvārambha-parityāgī
guṇātītaḥ sa uchyate
Those who are alike in happiness and
distress; who are established in the self; who look upon a clod, a stone, and a
piece of gold as of equal value; who remain the same amidst pleasant and
unpleasant events; who are intelligent; who accept both blame and praise with
equanimity; who remain the same in honour and dishonour; who treat both friend
and foe alike; and who have abandoned all enterprises – they are said to have
risen above the three guṇas.
जितात्मन: प्रशान्तस्य परमात्मा समाहित: |
शीतोष्णसुखदु:खेषु तथा मानापमानयो: ||BG6. 7||
jitātmanaḥ
praśhāntasya paramātmā samāhitaḥ
śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣhu
tathā mānāpamānayoḥ
The
yogis who have conquered the mind rise above the dualities of cold and heat,
joy and sorrow, honor and dishonor. Such yogis remain peaceful and steadfast in
their devotion to God.
सम: शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयो: |
शीतोष्णसुखदु:खेषु सम: सङ्गविवर्जित: || BG12.18||
तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्मौनी सन्तुष्टो येन केनचित् |
अनिकेत: स्थिरमतिर्भक्तिमान्मे प्रियो नर: ||BG12. 19||
samaḥ
śhatrau cha mitre cha tathā mānāpamānayoḥ
śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣhu
samaḥ saṅga-vivarjitaḥ
tulya-nindā-stutir
maunī santuṣhṭo yena kenachit
aniketaḥ
sthira-matir bhaktimān me priyo naraḥ
Those, who are alike to friend and
foe, equipoised in honour and dishonour, cold and heat, joy and sorrow, and are
free from all unfavourable association; those who take praise and reproach
alike, who are given to silent contemplation, content with what comes their
way, without attachment to the place of residence, whose intellect is firmly
fixed in Me, and who are full of devotion to Me, such persons are very dear to
Me.
