GOOD FORTUNE-BHAGYAANI-भाग्यानि ( भाग्यवान् )

SUBHASHITHANI:177
Sushilo maatru punyena pitru punyena chaaturah.
Audaaryam vamsha punyena aatma punyena bhaagyavaan.
A person inherits good character from his mother, skill and dexterity from father, generosity from family , good fortune from his own merits (punya).
Bhagyavaan jaayataam putrah maa shurah maa cha panditah I
Shuraascha kruta vidyaascha rane seedanti matsutaah II Kunti devi in Mahabharata
May you get a son who is blessed with good fortune , rather than a brave or  a scholar. My children who were brave and well trained in shaastras , are  suffering in the battle field.
Samudra methane lebhe harir lakshmeem haro visham I

During the churning of the milky ocean , Hari got Sri Maha Lakshmi , siva (Hara) got haalahaala visham (poison ).It is one’s good fortune that gives the fruit and not vidhyaa or bravery.

Whether one drowns in water,or ascends the peak of Meru; whether he conquers his enemies in battle or take to business, agriculture or service; he may learn all the arts and crafts; he may even with a lot of endeavour fly in the sky and he do anything he likes; but what is not destined will not happen and whatever is fated will definitely occur- it is inevitable.

When one accumulates a lot of good karma over lot of births, he becomes  fortunate to be in association with  virtuous people. With such association, he can learn to defeat the darkness called - attachment and pride. Once the darkness of ‘ignorance’ is removed, the path to wisdom (viveka) is illuminated.

One who is fortunate ( prosperous ) will have the benefit of his wife and children treating him like a king; friends and relatives treating  him like a boss; and being treated like a teacher in a large assembly.
Neeti satakam
It is not the looks, heritage, character, education or service done with effort, but the good fortune accumulated due to previous penance which gives timely results like trees.

He is a son who pleases his father with good actions; that is a wife who wishes unmixed good to her husband; that is a friend who acts the same in adversity as in happy times. The meritorious (alone) secure this triad in this world.

Good actions done in a former life protect a man in a forest, on a battlefield, in the midst of foes, water and fire, in the vast ocean, or on a mountain-top, whether asleep or careless, or beset with any difficulty.

  1. Kunti Devi seeking a son who is Fortunate rather than Brave and Scholarly seems out if character. Perhaps we have to ignore it as the lament of a mother whose sons are at covert it overt war right thru their lives.

  2. Kunti blessed Uttara ( who was pregnant ) when she wanted her blessings.
The idea is one should not lose good life for the sake of knowledge and fame. People can have other views also.VNM
