Trees stand in sun and give shade
to others. Their fruits are also for others. Similarly good people go through
all hardships for welfare of others.
paropakāraḥ
karttavyaḥ prāṇairapi dhanairapi | paropakārajaṃ puṇyaṃ na syātkratuśatairapi
||
Altruistic acts should be
performed even with risk to one's life and wealth; the merit accrued through
altruistic deeds may not be gained even with hundreds of religious sacrifices.
aṣṭādaśapurāṇeṣu
vyāsasya vacanadvayam| paropakāraḥ puṇyāya
pāpāya parapīḍanam ||
In all the eighteen purāṇas,
Vyāsa has but two pieces of advice - altruism earns divine merit and tormenting
others entails sin.
paropakārāya
phalanti vṛkṣāḥ paropakārāya vahanti nadyaḥ |
paropakārāya
duhanti gāvaḥ paropakārārthamidaṃ śarīram ||
Trees
bear fruits for the sake of others, Rivers flow for others, Cows give milk for
others, similarly human body is for doing service to others.
The sun and the moon, the clouds,
the trees, the rivers and the noble-minded people, all these were specially
created by the gods for the purpose of altruism in this (kali)yuga.
River never drinks its own water.
A tree does not eat its own fruits. Clouds do not consume the crops on which
they shower. Good people always use their power to help others.
Trees bend down with the
emergence of fruits. A cloud full of water floats low in the sky. Similarly,
good people do not become proud in prosperity. Such indeed is the nature of
people dedicated to the service of others.
