ON FRIENDSHIP (2) – SLOKAS FROM RAMAYANA


SUBHASHITHAM : 055

उपकार फलं मित्रं  अपकारो अरिलक्षणं  II
Upakaara phalam mitram apakaaro ari lakshanam II 
Help in time of need is the resultant of friendship and harm is the sign of enmity.
दुखित: सुखितो वापि सख्युर्नित्यं सखा गति:  II
Dukhita: sukhito vaapi sakhyurnityam sakhaa gati:  II
In times of prosperity or adversity a friend is always the sole resort.
सर्वथा सुकरं मित्रं दुष्करं प्रतिपालनम् I
अनित्यत्वात् तु चित्तानां प्रीतिरल्पेSपिभिध्यते  II
Sarvatha sukharam mitram Dushkaram pratipaalanam I
Anityatvaat tu chittaanaam preetiralpepi bhidhyate II
It is very easy to acquire friendship but very hard to maintain it. Due to the inconstancy of the mind, the friendship breaks at the slightest provocation.
पूर्वं कृतार्थो मित्राणां तत् प्रतिकरोतिय: I
क्र्तघ्न: सर्वभूतानां वद्य: फ्लवगेश्वर  II
Poorvam krutaartho mitraanaam na tat pratikarotiya: I
Krutagna: sarvabhutaanaam sa vadya: phlavageshvara  II
Of all the sinners, he is to be hanged who shows ingratitude to his friends who helped him in distress.
எந்நன்றி கொன்றார்க்கும் உய்வுண்டாம் உய்வில்லை
செய்ந்நன்றி கொன்ற மகற்கு.
There is salvation for faltering on any virtue but not for ingratitude.  ( Kural-110)
गोघ्ने चैव सुरापे चौरेभग्न  व्रते तथा I
निष्कृति र्विहिता सद्भि: कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृति: II
Expiations there are for certain kinds of sins such as the murder of a Brahmin, Drinking, Stealing, Failure to perform religious rites; but there is no redemption for ingratitude.
