One must put efforts
to get rid of the ten bad effects arising out of Lust , eight defects
arising out of Anger with all his might. One who is not able to control desire
will lose nobility and wealth; one who succumbs to anger destroys himself
totally. (Not able obtain details of the ten and eight defects mentioned in the
sloka . Any one who can help is welcome.)
Now, the Bhagavad Gita describes beautifully, the process of
how man gets totally destroyed from just
an apparently harmless initial attraction
to an object of desire:
ध्यायतो विषयान्पुंस: सङ्गस्तेषूपजायते |
सङ्गात्सञ्जायते काम: कामात्क्रोधोऽभिजायते || 62||
dhyāyato viṣhayān
puṁsaḥ saṅgas teṣhūpajāyate I saṅgāt
sañjāyate kāmaḥ kāmāt krodho ’bhijāyate II
BG 2.62: While musing on the objects of the senses, one develops
attachment to them. Attachment leads to Desire, and from Desire arises Anger.
क्रोधाद्भवति सम्मोह: सम्मोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रम: |
स्मृतिभ्रंशाद् बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति || 63||
krodhād
bhavati sammohaḥ sammohāt smṛiti-vibhramaḥ
smṛiti-bhranśhād
buddhi-nāśho buddhi-nāśhāt praṇaśhyati
BG 2.63: Anger leads to delusion, which results in confusion
of memory. When the memory is confused,
the intellect gets destroyed; and when the intellect is destroyed, one is
ruined
Gita also goes on to say what
should be done to get out of the clutches of the deadly twins:

BG
3.41: Therefore, O best of the Bharatas, in the very beginning bring the senses
under control and slay this enemy called desire, which is the embodiment of sin
and destroys knowledge and realization.
