PANCHA TANTRA-MITRA BHEDAA-50

 SUBHASHITHANI:384

The story of Soocheemukha ( Needle beaked )
and the group of monkeys:
On a chilly day monkeys got hold of red berries and were blowing it thinking it will provide them some warmth. A bird, from a near by tree told them they are not embers but red berries. The monkeys felt insulted and killed the bird. That is why it is said-"Advice given to fools only serves to irritate them and does not pacify them" Verse 420

nānāmyaṃ namate dāru nāśmani syāt kṣura-kriyā |
sūcī-mukhaṃ vijānīhi nāśiṣyāyopaśyate || 417 ||

A dry log which cannot be bent, does not ever bend. A razor cannot be used on stone. Likewise, oh Soocheemukha, it is very difficult to teach an undeserving student, he will never understand.”

muhur vighnita-karmāṇaṃ dyūta-kāraṃ parājitam |
nālāpayed viveka-jño yadīcchet siddhim ātmanaḥ || 418 ||
If one desires one’s own welfare, he should not give advice to one who is often hampered in his efforts, converse with a gambler who has just lost money, and a person who has just sustained a defeat.

ākheṭakaṃ vṛthākleśaṃ mūrkhaṃ vyasanasaṃsthitam |
samālāpena yo yuṅkte sa gacchati parābhavam || 419 ||

That indiscriminate person who converses with a hunter, whose efforts have been in vain , with a fool, with one addicted to vice, suffers defeat.

upadeśo hi mūrkhāṇāṃ prakopāya na śāntaye |
payaḥ-pānaṃ bhujaṅgānāṃ kevalaṃ viṣa-vardhanam || 420 ||

Advice to fools only serves to irritate them and not pacifying them. Feeding the snake with milk only increases it’s venom.

upadeśo na dātavyo yādṛśe tādṛśe nare |
paśya vānaramūrkheṇa sugṛhī nirgṛhīkṛtā || 421 ||

Advice should not be offered to persons without discrimination. Look!  One having a nice home was rendered homeless by n inconsiderate ape.

Hasta paada semopeto dhrusyase purusha krutih I

Sheetena bhidhyase moodah katham na kurushe gruham II422

Endowed with hands and feet you appear to possess human shape; you are distressed by cold; why fool, do you not construct a house.

sūcī-mukhi durācārā raṇḍā paṇḍita-vādinī |
nāśaṅkate prajalpantī tat kim enāṃ na hanmy aham || 423 ||

Soocheemukhee, ill-behaved, the cursed one, professing to talk good sense, does not fear to speak like this; why should I not kill her then!

vācyaṃ śraddhā-sametasya pṛcchateś ca viśeṣataḥ |
proktaṃ śraddhā-vihīnasya araṇya-ruditopamam || 424 ||

Advice should be given to one who has faith in the adviser and especially when one seeks it. What is said by way of advice to one wanting in faith is like crying in the wilderness.
