THE STORY OF THE PIGEONS AND THE HUNTER

















तन्तवो ऽप्य् आयता नित्यं तन्तवो बहुलाः समाः
बहून् बहुत्वाद् आयासान् सहन्तीत्य् उपमा सताम्
tantavo 'py āyatā nityaṃ tantavo bahulāḥ samāḥ |
bahūn bahutvād āyāsān sahantīty upamā satām ||2.8 ||
Thin and long threads which are prone to giving way, can resist great tension when they are woven together; good men although very weak can also resist many difficulties and come out successful if they act in union with others. ( Tantavo- made of thread )

जालम् आदाय गच्छन्ति संहताः पक्षिणो ऽप्य् अमी
यावच् विवदिष्यन्ते पतिष्यन्ति संशयः

jālam ādāya gacchanti saṃhatāḥ pakṣiṇo 'py amī |
yāvac ca vivadiṣyante patiṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ ||2.9 ||

Being united, these mere birds, are carrying away my net; how ever, there is no doubt that they will fall down as soon there is some disunity amongst them. ( Jaalam- Net,trap)

नहि भवति यन् भाव्यं भवति भाव्यं विनापि यत्नेन
करतल-गतम् अपि नश्यति यस्य हि भवितव्यता नास्ति १०

nahi bhavati yan na bhāvyaṃ bhavati ca bhāvyaṃ vināpi yatnena |
karatala-gatam api naśyati yasya hi bhavitavyatā nāsti || 2.10 ||

What is not to happen can never take place; and what is destined to take place happens even with out any effort. What is not destined to be passes away even though it may be lying on own’s own palm. (Bhavitavyataa- destiny,fate )

पराङ्मुखे विधौ चेत् स्यात् कथञ्चिद् द्रविणोदयः
तत् सो ऽन्यद् अपि सङ्गृह्य याति शङ्ख-निधिर् यथा ११

parāṅmukhe vidhau cet syāt kathañcid draviṇodayaḥ |
tat so 'nyad api saṅgṛhya yāti śaṅkha-nidhir yathā || 2.11 ||

When fate is adverse, if one comes by fortune somehow, that passes off taking with it something else also, like the treasure shankha of Kubera.

सर्वेषाम् एव मर्त्यानां व्यसने समुपस्थिते
वाङ्-मात्रेणापि साहाय्यं मित्राद् अन्यो सन्दधे १२

sarveṣām eva martyānāṃ vyasane samupasthite |
vāṅ-mātreṇāpi sāhāyyaṃ mitrād anyo na sandadhe || 2.12 ||

When calamity befalls all men equally, it is only a friend who helps, even if it is only be mere words.

दंष्ट्रा-विरहितः सर्पो मद-हीनो यथा गजः
सर्वेषां जायते वश्यो दुर्ग-हीनस् तथा नृपः १३

daṃṣṭrā-virahitaḥ sarpo mada-hīno yathā gajaḥ |
sarveṣāṃ jāyate vaśyo durga-hīnas tathā nṛpaḥ || 2.13 ||

Just as a snake without fangs, or an elephant destitute of rut is reduced to submission by every one so is a king without a fort.

गजानां सहस्रेण लक्षेण वाजिनाम्
तत् कर्म सिध्यते राज्ञां दुरेणैकेन यद् रणे १४

na gajānāṃ sahasreṇa na ca lakṣeṇa vājinām |
tat karma sidhyate rājñāṃ dureṇaikena yad raṇe || 2.14 ||

A single royal fortress gives more military might than do a  thousand elephants or a hundred thousand horses.

शतम् एको ऽपि सन्धत्ते प्राकारस्थो धनुर्धरः
तस्माद् दुर्गं प्रशंसन्ति नीति-शास्त्र-विदो जनाः १५

śatam eko 'pi sandhatte prākārastho dhanurdharaḥ |
tasmād durgaṃ praśaṃsanti nīti-śāstra-vido janāḥ || 2.15 ||

A single archer from the wall can match a hundred enemy soldiers; it is therefore recommended to have a fortress by experts on military arts.
