Karataka continued to chastise Damanaka : "You are foolish and will not learn even if somebody advises you with sincerity and care. It is not a fault of yours. Only a person with open mind gains from advice from others." As the saying goes....
किं करोत्य् एव पाण्डित्यम् अस्थाने विनियोजितम् ।
अन्धकार-प्रतिच्छन्ने घटे दीप इवाहितः ॥ ४२५ ॥
kiṃ
karoty eva pāṇḍityam asthāne viniyojitam |
andhakāra-praticchanne ghaṭe dīpa ivāhitaḥ || 425 ||
What can scholarship do
when employed in the wrong place? It is like a lamp set in to a pot covered up
with darkness.
अपजातश् च लोकेऽस्मिन् मन्तव्याः शास्त्र-वेदिभिः ॥ ४२६ ॥
jātaḥ putro 'nujātaś ca atijātas tathaiva ca |
apajātaś ca loke'smin mantavyāḥ śāstra-vedibhiḥ || 426 ||
The wise men declare that Jaataa, anujaataa, ati jaataa and apajaataa are the four type children born to parents in this world.
मातृ-तुल्य-गुणो जातस् त्व् अनुजातः पितुः समः ।
अतिजातो ऽधिकस् तस्माद् अपजातो ऽधमाधमः ॥ ४२७ ॥
mātṛ-tulya-guṇo
jātas tv anujātaḥ pituḥ samaḥ |
atijāto 'dhikas tasmād apajāto 'dhamādhamaḥ || 427 ||
Jaata is a child who has the qualities of the mother. A child who has
the qualities of the father is called Anujaata . A child who has qualities
that exceed those of his parents is called Atijaata, the one who excels. And a
child who has the worst of the qualities of his parent is called Apajaata – the
one without qualities.
अप्य् आत्मनो विनाशं गणयति न खलः पर-व्यसन-हृष्टः ।
प्रायो मस्तक-नाशे समर-मुखे नृत्यति कबन्धः ॥ ४२८ ॥

ātmano vināśaṃ gaṇayati na khalaḥ para-vyasana-hṛṣṭaḥ |
prāyo
mastaka-nāśe samara-mukhe nṛtyati kabandhaḥ || 428 ||
A wicked man, delighted at
the misfortunes of others do not mind his own ruin even; generally, the living
decapitated trunk dances at the commencement of a battle although the head be
lost.
THE STORY OF DHARMA BUDDHI AND PAAPA BUDDHI
In a town lived two friends by the names of Dharmabuddhi and Paapbuddhi. Once Paapbuddhi thought that since he himself was quite stupid and poor, if he could go with Dharmabuddhi to foreign lands, with his help make some money, and while returning seize Dharmabuddhi's earnings as well, then life would become very good.
पुत्रेण व्यर्थ-पाण्डित्यात् पिता धूमेन घातितः ॥ ४२९ ॥
putreṇa vyartha-pāṇḍityāt pitā dhūmena ghātitaḥ || 429 ||
देशान्तरेषु बहु-विध-भाषा-वेषादि येन न ज्ञातम् ।
भ्रमता धरणी-पीठे तस्य फलं जन्मनो व्यर्थम् ॥ ४३० ॥
deśāntareṣu
bahu-vidha-bhāṣā-veṣādi yena na jñātam |
bhramatā dharaṇī-pīṭhe tasya phalaṃ janmano vyartham || 430 ||
One who does not learn
languages of other regions and different kinds of dresses, fruitless is the
existence of such a person.
विद्यां वित्तं शिल्पं तावन् नाप्नोति मानवः सम्यक् ।
यावद् व्रजति न भूमौ देशाद् देशान्तरं हृष्टः ॥ ४३१ ॥
vidyāṃ
vittaṃ śilpaṃ tāvan nāpnoti mānavaḥ samyak |
yāvad vrajati na bhūmau deśād deśāntaraṃ hṛṣṭaḥ || 431 ||
One does not properly acquire
learning, wealth and a knowledge of arts, as long as he does not travel with
enthusiasm to different countries of the world.
क्रोश-मात्रो ऽपि भू-भागः शत-योजनवद् भवेत् ॥ ४३२ ॥
krośa-mātro 'pi bhū-bhāgaḥ śata-yojanavad bhavet || 432 ||
मुनेर् अपि यतस् तस्य दर्शनाच् चलते मनः ॥ ४३३ ॥
na vittaṃ darśayet prājñaḥ kasyacit svalpam apy aho |
muner api yatas tasya darśanāc calate manaḥ || 433 ||
आकाशे पक्षिभिश् चैव तथा सर्वत्र वित्तवान् ॥ ४३४ ॥
yathāmiṣaṃ jale matsyair bhakṣyate śvāpadair bhuvi |
ākāśe pakṣibhiś caiva tathā sarvatra vittavān || 434 ||
in water, lions and other wild animals on land, and birds in the sky are forever ready to eat flesh, there are people forever ready to devour the wealth of a rich man.
Our ancient scholars had a global approach , commendable.
