WINNING OF FRIENDS -PTML-1

 SUBHASHITHANI:390

THE WINNING OF FRIENDS:

The stories in the second tantra called ‘ Mitra Laabhaa’ gives insight into how lost friends can be regained and also how to make new friends. In addition It teaches how people or friends with mutual interest can join together to achieve a common goal and redeem themselves from difficult situations.

asādhanā api prājñā buddhimanot bahu-śrutāḥ |
sādhayanty āśu kāryāṇi kākākhu-mṛga-kūrmavat || 2.1 ||
Wise men, gifted with genius and well-informed, accomplish their purposes quickly, though destitute of means, like the crow, the mouse, the deer and the tortoise. ( kaaka-crow, Aakhoo- Mouse, Mruga- Deer, Koorma- Tortoise )

chāyā-supta-mṛgaḥ śakunta-nivahair viṣvag-vilupta-cchadaḥ

The animals of the forest rested under its shade; its leaves were occupied by many birds; its hollows were occupied by insects; troops of monkeys dwelt on its branches; bees fearlessly drank the honey from its flowers thus providing happiness to various creatures, that tree alone was worthy of praise. A tree other than such is a burden to the earth.

The prosperity of the world springs from the ‘kindliness’, those who have it not are a burden to the earth.

jihvā-laulya-prasaktānāṃ jala-madhya-nivāsinām |
acintito vadho 'jñānāṃ mīnānām iva jāyate ||2.3 ||

Unexpected death overtakes those who are overpowered by greediness of tongue, or those who live in the midst of water and who are ignorant, as does the fish getting drawn to the bait.

paulastyaḥ katham anya-dāra-haraṇe doṣaṃ na vijñātavān

rāmeṇāpi kathaṃ na hema-hariṇasyāsambhavo lakṣitaḥ |
akṣaiś cāpi yudhiṣṭhireṇa sahasā prāpto hy anarthaḥ kathaṃ

 pratyāsanna-vipatti-mūḍha-manasāṃ prāyo matiḥ kṣīyate || 2.4 ||

How is it that Rāvana, the grandson of Pulastya, did not know that kidnapping another’s wife is a sin? How is it that Rama did not doubt the reality of a golden deer? How is it that Yudhishthira lost everything in an instant through gambling? When there is an impending calamity, the intellect of even the best of men become clouded and loses its acuteness.

kṛtānta-pāśa-baddhānāṃ daivopahata-cetasām |
buddhayaḥ kubja-gāminyo bhavanti mahatām api || 2.5 ||

When once the mind is gripped by fate, the judgement even of the great men go astray, when they are caught in to the snares of Yama ( The god of death ).

vyasaneṣv eva sarveṣu yasya buddhir na hīyate |
sa teṣāṃ pāram abhyeti tat-prabhāvād asaṃśayam || 2.6 ||

He, whose presence of mind does not fail him even in difficult situations, will be able to overcome adversity, with the help of his firmness of mind.

sampattau ca vipattau ca mahatām eka-rūpatā |
udaye savitā rakto raktaś cāsta-maye tathā ||2.7 ||

The nature of the great men is the same in prosperity or adversity. The sun looks  red both at the time of rising  and at the time of setting.

  1. The application of the crow, mouse, deer and tortoise , the selfless giving of the tree, the composure of the wise man are to be emulated. The universe benefits by the Maker’s abundance at the mega level; people , animals and all creations benefit from each other.
