TRUST JUDICIOUSLY -PTML6

 SUBHASHITHANI:395

The Crow-Rat Discourse:

mṛd-ghaṭa iva sukha-bhedyo duḥsandhānaś ca durjano bhavati |
sujanas tu kanaka-ghaṭa iva durbhedaḥ sukara-sandhiś ca ||2.37 ||

Friendship with a wicked man is like an earthen pot; It is easily broken into pieces and difficult to be reunited. But friendship with a virtuous man is like a pot of gold, which is difficult to break and can be easily repaired.

ikṣor agrāt kramaśaḥ parvaṇi parvaṇi yathā rasa-viśeṣaḥ |
tadvat sajjana-maitrī-viparītānāṃ tu viparītā ||2.38 ||
As the juice of sugar-cane is sweeter and sweeter at every joint in order from the end  so is the friendship of the good; while it is the opposite with wicked men.

ārambhagurvī kṣayiṇī krameṇa
laghvī purā vṛddhimatī ca paścāt
dinasya pūrvārdhaparārdhabhinnā
chāyeva maitrī khalasajjanānām ॥2.39
Long to begin with, but diminishes later; (then again), it is small to start off but increases gradually - just the way a shadow differs in the first half of the day from the second half (of the day), so does the friendship of a wicked person and a good person.

śapathaiḥ sandhitasyāpi na viśvāsaṃ vrajed ripoḥ |
śrūyate śapathaṃ kṛtvā vṛtraḥ śakreṇa sūditaḥ ||2.40 ||

One should not trust an enemy even though united by oaths; Vrutraasuraa was killed by Indra even though he had taken an oath not to kill him.

na viśvāsaṃ vinā śatrur devānām api sidhyati |
viśvāsāt tridaśendreṇa diter garbho vidāritaḥ || 2.41 ||

Even devatas cannot overcome an enemy without securing his confidence; he embryo of Diti ( mother of asuras) was torn asunder by Indhra through faith.

bṛhaspater api prājñas tasmān naivātra viśvaset |
ya icched ātmano buddhim āyuṣyaṃ ca sukhāni ca || 2.42 ||

A wise man who desires his own welfare, happiness and long life, should not even trust Bruhaspati, the preceptor of the gods.

susūkṣmeṇāpi randhreṇa praviśyābhyantaraṃ ripuḥ |
nāśayec ca śanaiḥ paścāt plavaṃ salila-pūravat || 2.43 ||

An enemy having entered through a narrow passage gradually destroys one afterwards; just like a leaky boat through flood of water.

na viśvased aviśvaste viśvaste'pi na viśvaset |
viśvāsād bhayam utpannaṃ mūlāny api nikṛntati || 2.44 ||

Don’t trust a person untrustworthy, also don’t trust one who has won your confidence for faith has its own limits; The evil that trust brings Leaves you totally destroyed.

na badhyate hy aviśvasto durbalo 'pi balotkaṭaiḥ |
viśvastāś cāśu badhyante balavanto 'pi durbalaiḥ || 2.45 ||

One who never trusts anyone easily, although weak, is not destroyed by even the powerful; but those who trusts others easily ,though strong, are quickly destroyed even by the weak.

  1. We have to be careful while choosing friends ; we should judge well before trusting anybody, it should not be misplaced trust
