PANCHA TANTRA-MITRA BHEDAA-48

 SUBHASHITHANI:382

Seeing Pingalaka and Sanjivaka fighting  from a distance, Karataka looked at Damanaka angrily and said ” You fool! Look at what you have done! This enmity that you created between two friends is wrong. You think you know politics, but you are confused. The wise men say.."   They are truly called ministers who, well versed in politics... verse  407 "

अवध्यं वाथवागम्यम् अकृत्यं नास्ति किंचन
लोके बुद्धिमताम् अत्र तस्मात् तां योजयाम्य् अहम् ४००

avadhyaṃ vāthavāgamyam akṛtyaṃ nāsti kiṃcana |
loke buddhimatām atra tasmāt tāṃ yojayāmy aham || 400 ||

For an intelligent man, there is no being who cannot be convinced, nor any place that he cannot enter, nor any task that he cannot accomplish. And so, people should use their intelligence at the right time, when required.

अगम्यानि पुमान् याति यो ऽसेव्यांश् निषेवते
मृत्युम् उपगृह्णाति गर्भम् अश्वतरी यथा ४०१

agamyāni pumān yāti yo 'sevyāṃś ca niṣevate |
sa mṛtyum upagṛhṇāti garbham aśvatarī yathā || 401 ||

If one goes to a man who is not fit to be approached and serves somebody who is unfit, he is as though inviting death; just as a mule bears the foetus which proves her death.

धर्मार्थं यतताम् अपीह विपदो देवाद् यदि स्युः क्वचित्

 तत् तासाम् उपशान्तये सुमतिभिः कार्यो विशेषान् नयः
लोके ख्यातिम् उपागतात्र सकले लोकोक्तिर् एषा यतो

दग्धानां किल वह्निना हित-करः सेको ऽपि तस्योद्भवः ४०२

dharmārthaṃ yatatām apīha vipado devād yadi syuḥ kvacit

tat tāsām upaśāntaye sumatibhiḥ kāryo viśeṣān nayaḥ |
loke khyātim upāgatātra sakale lokoktir eṣā yato

 dagdhānāṃ kila vahninā hita-karaḥ seko 'pi tasyodbhavaḥ || 402 ||

If in some cases misfortune should overtake men striving to do their duty, as ill luck would have it, then talented men should stick to their duty all the more; for the common saying goes that a hot lotion is beneficial to those affected by burns.

 ( Idea here is:  if misfortune arises from a person it is wise policy to conciliate with very man.)

लोकेऽथवा तनु-भृतां निज-कर्म-पाकं

नित्यं समाश्रितवतां सुहित-क्रियाणाम्
भावार्जितं शुभम् अथाप्य् अशुभं निकामं

यद् भावि तद् भवति नात्र विचार-हेतुः ४०३

loke'thavā tanu-bhṛtāṃ nija-karma-pākaṃ

nityaṃ samāśritavatāṃ suhita-kriyāṇām |
bhāvārjitaṃ śubham athāpy aśubhaṃ nikāmaṃ

yad bhāvi tad bhavati nātra vicāra-hetuḥ || 403 ||

In this world, in case of embodied beings who reap the fruits of their own deeds and whose actions are well regulated, whatever is to happen, whether good or evil, inspite of their will and according to the innate disposition of their minds, does take place. It is not a mater to be decided by Reasoning.

महद्भिः स्पर्धमानस्य विपद् एव गरीयसी
दन्त-भङ्गेऽपि नागानां श्लाघ्यो गिरि-विदारणे ४०४
mahadbhiḥ spardhamānasya vipad eva garīyasī |
danta-bhaṅge'pi nāgānāṃ ślāghyo giri-vidāraṇe || 404 ||
Calamity itself is more to the honour of one who emulates with the great; the breaking of their tusks is creditable to elephants when engaged in tearing up mountains.

பிழைத்தது ஒறுக்கிற் பவர்

Who has the right to blame the men who lose their lives in the attempt to accomplish that which they have undertaken?

महतो ऽपि क्षयं लब्ध्वा श्लाघ्यं नीचो ऽपि गच्छति
दानार्थी मधुपो यद्वद् गज-कर्ण-समाहतः ४०५

mahato 'pi kṣayaṃ labdhvā ślāghyaṃ nīco 'pi gacchati |
dānārthī madhupo yadvad gaja-karṇa-samāhataḥ || 405 ||

Even a mean person earns praise on meeting with destruction from a great man like bee seeking the rut juice beaten off by the ears of an elephant.

अन्तर्-लीन-भुजङ्गमं गृहम् इवान्तःस्थोग्र-सिंहं वनं

ग्राहाकीर्णम् इवाभिराम-कमल-च्छाया-सनाथं सरः
कालेनार्य-जनापवाद-पिशुनैः क्षुद्रैर् अनार्यैः श्रितं

 दुःखेन प्रविगाह्यते -चकितं राज्ञां मनः सामयम् ४०६

antar-līna-bhujaṅgamaṃ gṛham ivāntaḥsthogra-siṃhaṃ vanaṃ

grāhākīrṇam ivābhirāma-kamala-cchāyā-sanāthaṃ saraḥ |
kālenārya-janāpavāda-piśunaiḥ kṣudrair anāryaiḥ śritaṃ duḥkhena

 pravigāhyate sa-cakitaṃ rājñāṃ manaḥ sāmayam || 406 ||

Like a house in which a cobra is lurking, or a forest infested with wild animals, or like a lake with the beds of lovely lotuses abounding in crocodiles, the abode of kings where wicked men roam around spreading lies, is, like the sea approached by men but with pain and misgivings.

कार्याण्य् उत्तम-दण्ड-साहस-फलान्य् आयास-साध्यानि ये

प्रीत्या संशमयन्ति नीति-कुशलाः साम्नैव ते मन्त्रिणः
निःसाराल्प-फलानि ये त्व् अविधिना वाञ्छन्ति दण्डोद्यमैस्

 तेषां दुर्नय-चेष्टितैर् नरपतेर् आरोप्यते श्रीस् तुलाम् ४०७

kāryāṇy uttama-daṇḍa-sāhasa-phalāny āyāsa-sādhyāni ye

 prītyā saṃśamayanti nīti-kuśalāḥ sāmnaiva te mantriṇaḥ |
niḥsārālpa-phalāni ye tv avidhinā vāñchanti daṇḍodyamais

 teṣāṃ durnaya-ceṣṭitair narapater āropyate śrīs tulām || 407 ||

They are truly called ministers who, well versed in politics, settle by the power of their intellect, by peaceful means alone, affairs which otherwise would result in adopting violent measures; And those ministers who go about solving even trivial issues through punishment and violence, ruin the prosperity of their kingdoms.
