DEVELOPING FRIENDSHIP -PTML5

 SUBHASHITHANI:394

Having seen the act of Hiranyaka (mouse) rescuing Chitragriva (Dove king) and his retinue, Laghu patanaka, the crow, decided that instead of trusting no one and being lonely , it would be better to develop the friendship of Hiranyaka.

As the old saying goes:Wise men, even though they may be endowed with opulence should always seek the friendship of other men. The mighty ocean is full to the brim, yet awaits the rise of the moon.”- verse2.28

yayor eva samaṃ vittaṃ yayor eva samaṃ kulam |
tayor maitrī vivāhaś ca na tu puṣṭa-vipuṣṭayoḥ || 2.29 ||
Friendship or marriage can take place only between those equal in wealth and status, not between the strong and the weak.

yo mitraṃ kurute mūḍha ātmano 'sadṛśaṃ kudhīḥ |
hīnaṃ vāpy adhikaṃ vāpi hāsyatāṃ yāty asau janaḥ ||2.30 ||

That foolish man, wicked by nature, who makes friendship with his unequal (superior or inferior) meets with ridicule.

vairiṇā na hi sandadhyāt suśliṣṭenāpi sandhinā |
sutaptam api pānīyaṃ śamayaty eva pāvakam || 2.31 ||

One should not make an alliance with an enemy however close he may be to him; Even if water is hot, it will still put out a fire.

kṛtrimaṃ nāśam abhyeti vairaṃ drāk kṛtrimair guṇaiḥ |
prāṇa-dānaṃ vinā vairaṃ sahajaṃ yāti na kṣayam || 2.32 ||

Enmity that arises for specific reason, may vanish when the cause is removed, but in-born enmity terminates only with death.

kāraṇān mitratām eti kāraṇād yāti śatrutām |
tasmān mitratvam evātra yojyaṃ vairaṃ na dhīmatā ||
2.33 ||

Friendship or enmity develops due to some reason or the other; therefore, a prudent one should strive to make friendship and avoid making enemies.

sakṛd duṣṭam apīṣṭaṃ yaḥ punaḥ sandhātum icchati |
sa mṛtyum upagṛhṇāti garbham aśvatarī yathā || 2.34 ||

Once made an enemy and then tries to make friendship, he surely invites death like a pregnant female mule.

siṃho vyākaraṇasya kartur aharat prāṇān piryān pāṇiner

mīmāṃsā-kṛtam unmamātha sahasā hastī muniṃ jaiminim |
chando-jñāna-nidhiṃ jaghāna makaro velā-taṭe piṅgalam

 ajñānāvṛta-cetasām atiruṣā ko ‘rthas tiraścāṃ guṇaiḥ || 2.35 ||

A lion took the life of Paanini, grammer’s most famous name; A tusker madly crushed sage Jaimini of metaphysic fame; A crocodile killed the vedic scholar Pingala; the vile have no value for scholarly attainments.

upakārāc ca lokānāṃ nimittān mṛga-pakṣiṇām |
bhayāl lobhāc ca mūrkhāṇāṃ maitrī syād darśanāt satām || 2.36 ||

In the case of men friendship is due to mutual deeds of obligation, of beasts and birds to some cause, of fools to fear or greed; and of the wise mere sight.

  1. Friendship is to be cherished; but it should be within equals and like minds. Otherwise, it is disastrous.
