OF CROWS AND OWLS- KAKOLUKIYAM-PTKU23

 SUBHASHITHANI:440

ekasyāpy atither annaṃ yaḥ pradātuṃ na śaktimān |
tasyāneka-parikleśe gṛhe kiṃ vasataḥ phalam || 3.165 ||

Whosoever is incapable of feeding even a single guest, what purpose will be served by him staying in a house with innumerable troubles.

tat tathā sādhayāmy etac charīraṃ duḥkha-jīvitam |
yathā bhūyo na vakṣyāmi nāstīty arthi-samāgame || 3.166 ||

I will, therefore, do something with this body of miserable existence that in future there will be no occasion to say to a guest that - ‘I have nothing to offer’.

Nothing is bitter than death: but even that is welcome when one has nothing to offer to one who seeks help.

The dove blamed itself and not the hunter again. He said- ‘I will satisfy your hunger, please wait for some time’.

evam uktvā sa dharmātmā prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā |
tam agniṃ samparikramya praviveśa sva-veśmavat || 3.168 ||

Having spoken these words, that embodiment of dharma, filled with happiness inside, went round the fire and entered in to it as he would his own sleeping place.

tatas taṃ lubdhako dṛṣṭvā kṛpayā pīḍito bhṛśam |
kapotam agnau patitaṃ vākyam etad abhāṣata || 3.169 ||

There upon, the hunter seeing the dove falling in to the fire, heart profoundly filled with compassion, said the following.

yaḥ karoti naraḥ pāpaṃ na tasyātmā dhruvaṃ priyaḥ |
ātmanā hi kṛtaṃ pāpam ātmanaiva hi bhujyate || 3.170 ||

One who commits sin certainly does not do good to himself. For, the sin committed by one, has to be expiated by him, sooner or later.

so 'haṃ pāpa-matiś caiva pāpa-karma-rataḥ sadā |
patiṣyāmi mahā-ghore narake nātra saṃśayaḥ || 3.171 ||

With the mind filled with sinful thoughts, always doing wicked and cruel acts, I am certainly destined to fall in to terrible hell.

tasmāt tvaṃ dveṣam utsṛjya mad-bandhana-samudbhavam |
dharme manaḥ samādhāya pūjayainaṃ yathā-vidhi || 3.157 ||
Therefore, discording any feeling of hatred that might have arisen due to my being put in shackles, with mind focusing on following dharma, pay due respects to the guest.

tasyās tad-vacanaṃ śrutvā dharma-yukti-samanvitam |
upagamya tato 'dhṛṣṭaḥ kapotaḥ prāha lubdhakam || 3.158 ||
Hearing those words of his wife, which were stressing righteous conduct, he regained his composure and approached the hunter and spoke thus.

bhadra susvāgataṃ te’stu brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te |
santāpaś ca na kartavyaḥ sva-gṛhe vartate bhavān || 3.159 ||

Dear friend! Welcome to you and tell me what can I do for you. Don’t feel anguished and think that you are in your home.

tasya tad-vacanaṃ śrutvā pratyuvāca vihaṅgamam |
kapota khalu śītaṃ me hima-trāṇaṃ vidhīyatām || 3.160 ||

After hearing those words, the hunter replied to the dove; I am suffering from cold and please protect me from this unbearable cold.

sa gatvāṅgārakaṃ nītvā pātayāmāsa pāvakam |
tataḥ śuṣkeṣu parṇeṣu tam āśu samadīpayat || 3.161 ||

The bird went out and brought some char-coal and then kindled a fire with the help of dry leaves.

susandīptaṃ tataḥ kṛtvā tam āha śaraṇāgatam |
pratāpayasva viśrabdhaṃ sva-gātrāṇy atra nirbhayaḥ || 3.162 ||

After ensuring the fire was well lit, he spoke to the supplicant and said: warm your limbs well without any hesitation or fear.

We all, the residents of the forest live up on what we get by chance. I have nothing in my possession by which I can satisfy your hunger.

sahasraṃ bharate kaścic chatamanyo daśāparaḥ |

mama tv akṛta-puṇyasya kṣudrasyātmāpi durbharaḥ || 3.164 ||

Some maintain a thousand men, another hundred and yet another ten; while I, without any meritorious deeds, find it difficult to maintain even my own self.

The pigeon who was imprisoned in the cage heard the sad words of her husband, felt a warm feeling in her heart, and said- What more to be desired by a wife than her husband’s happiness? Once the husband is satisfied, then all the devatas will also be pleased. (3.148,3.149)

amitasya hi dātāraṃ bhartāraṃ kā na pūjayet || 3.151 ||

Here lies a fowler taking shelter under the tree which is your home. He is suffering from severe cold and hunger. As he is your guest you must offer all help and respect.

Do not entertain any hate for him who caged your loving wife; It is my destiny that has caused me to be held in captivity.

Penury, sickness, pain and misfortune of captivity are all the fruits of one’s own tree of past sinful actions.
