धूर्तब्राह्मणछागकथा
The story of the cheats, the Brahmin and the goat
Once a brahmin was returning back to his village after receiving his gift of a lamb. Three crooks saw the brahmin and decided to snatch the lamb from him. The first crook asked the brahmin why are you carrying a dog? .......








बहु-बुद्धि-समायुक्ताः सुविज्ञाना बलोत्कटान् ।
शक्ता वञ्चयितुं धूर्ता ब्राह्मणं छागलद् इव ॥ ११६ ॥

bahu-buddhi-samāyuktāḥ suvijñānā balotkaṭān |
śaktā vañcayituṃ dhūrtā brāhmaṇaṃ chāgalad iva || 3.116 ||

The wicked, who are very intelligent, and experts in the art of deception, are capable of deceiving anyone, like they cheated the Brahmin of his goat.

श्वान-कुक्कुट-चाण्डालाः सम-स्पर्शाः प्रकीर्तिताः ।
रासभोष्ट्रौ विशेषेण तस्मात् तान् नैव संस्पृशेत् ॥ ११७ ॥

śvāna-kukkuṭa-cāṇḍālāḥ sama-sparśāḥ prakīrtitāḥ |
rāsabhoṣṭrau viśeṣeṇa tasmāt tān naiva saṃspṛśet || 3.117 ||

The dog, rooster, an out-cast, an ass and the camel they defile you; therefore, one should no touch them.

तिर्यञ्चं मानुषं वापि यो मृतं संस्पृशेत् कुधीः ।
पञ्च-गव्येन शुद्धिः स्यात् तस्य चान्द्रायणेन वा ॥ ११८ ॥

tiryañcaṃ mānuṣaṃ vāpi yo mṛtaṃ saṃspṛśet kudhīḥ |
pañca-gavyena śuddhiḥ syāt tasya cāndrāyaṇena vā || 3.118 ||

Touch not a dead man or animal or unwisely person; otherwise, one has to perform pancha-gavya suddhi or chandraayana vratam.

यः स्पृशेद् रासभं मर्त्यो ज्ञानाद् अज्ञानतो ऽपि वा ।
स-चैलं स्नानम् उद्दिष्टं तस्य पाप-प्रशान्तये ॥ ११९ ॥

yaḥ spṛśed rāsabhaṃ martyo jñānād ajñānato 'pi vā |
sa-cailaṃ snānam uddiṣṭaṃ tasya pāpa-praśāntaye || 3.119 ||

Who ever touches a dead donkey whether knowingly or unknowingly has to purify himself by bathing with his dresses on.

अभिनव-सेवक-विनयैः

प्राघुणकोक्तैर् विलासिनीर् उदितैः ।
धूर्त-जन-वचन-निकरैर् इह

कश्चिद् अवञ्चितो नास्ति ॥ १२० ॥

abhinava-sevaka-vinayaiḥ

prāghuṇakoktair vilāsinīr uditaiḥ |
dhūrta-jana-vacana-nikarair iha

kaścid avañcito nāsti || 3.120 ||

There is no one who has not been deceived by the politeness of a newly-employed servants, and the pleasant words of guests, and by the crying of amorous women, and by the deceptive words of the wicked.

बहवो न विरोद्धव्या दुर्जया हि महाजनाः ।
स्फुरन्तम् अपि नागेन्द्रं भक्षयन्ति पिपीलिकाः ॥ १२१ ॥

bahavo na viroddhavyā durjayā hi mahājanāḥ |
sphurantam api nāgendraṃ bhakṣayanti pipīlikāḥ || 3.121 ||

One should avoid making enmity with many. It is difficult to defeat those who are united. The powerful snake was eaten by a group of ants.
