KAKOLUKIYAM-PTKU16

 SUBHASHITHANI:433 

After listening to the crow all the birds decided to meet later without appointing a king. The owl king, obviously disappointed, was angry and spoke to the crow thus:

रोहते सायकैर् विद्धं छिन्नं रोहति चासिना
वचो दुरुक्तं बीभत्सं प्ररोहति वाक्-क्षतम् १११
rohate sāyakair viddhaṃ chinnaṃ rohati cāsinā |
vaco duruktaṃ bībhatsaṃ na prarohati vāk-kṣatam || 3.111 ||
Injuries caused by arrows can heal. Cuts made by sharp swords can heal. But harsh words cause wounds that does not heal for ever.
தீயினாற் சுட்டபுண் உள்ளாறும் ஆறாதே
நாவினாற் சுட்ட வடு.-Thirukkural129
The burn caused by fire heals in its time; But the wound caused to the mind due to the bad and harsh words remains a running sore for ever.
Spoken to by the owl king like this the crow started  reflecting on his unsought advice to the birds:

अदेश-कालज्ञम् अनायति-क्षमं

यद् अप्रियं लाघव-कारि चात्मनः
यो ऽत्राब्रवीत् कारण-वर्जितं वचो

तद् वचः स्याद् विषम् एव तद् भवेत् ११२

adeśa-kālajñam anāyati-kṣamaṃ

yad apriyaṃ lāghava-kāri cātmanaḥ |
yo 'trābravīt kāraṇa-varjitaṃ vaco

 na tad vacaḥ syād viṣam eva tad bhavet || 3.112 ||

With out any cause, when a man utters words that does not take care of place and time, which can be detrimental in future, which are disagreeable, which lowers one’s dignity, are no words but poison.

இடம், பொருள், ஏவல் அறிந்து பேசுக- Never Speak without knowing the place, subject of discussion, and motive.

बलोपपन्नो ऽपि हि बुद्धिमान् नरः

परे नयेन् स्वयम् एव वैरिताम्
भिषङ् ममास्तीति विचिन्त्य भक्षयेद्

अकारणात् को हि विचक्षणो विषम् ११३

balopapanno 'pi hi buddhimān naraḥ
 pare nayen na svayam eva vairitām |
bhiṣaṅ mamāstīti vicintya bhakṣayed
 akāraṇāt ko hi vicakṣaṇo viṣam || 3.113 ||
A wise man, however strong he may be, should never turn another in to his enemy under ay circumstances; Which wise man would consume poison, trusting that the doctor is nearby and will save him?

परिवादः परिषदि कथञ्चित् पण्डितेन वक्तव्यः
सत्यम् अपि तन् वाच्यं यद् उक्तम् असुखावहं भवति ११४

parivādaḥ pariṣadi na kathañcit paṇḍitena vaktavyaḥ |
satyam api tan na vācyaṃ yad uktam asukhāvahaṃ bhavati || 3.114 ||

In an assembly a wise man should never speak ill of another. Even if it is true ,he should avoid speaking it if it will hurt someone.

( सत्यं ब्रूयात्प्रियं ब्रूयान्न ब्रूयात्सत्यमप्रियम् ।
  प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयादेष धर्मः सनातनः ॥
satyam brūyat_priyam brūyan_na brūyāt_satyam_apriyam ।
priyam cha nānṛitam brūyādéṣha dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥ [IAST]
“Say what is true, say what is pleasing, but do not say what is true but not pleasing, nor say what is pleasing but not true. This is the perennial wisdom.”- Manusmruti 4.138 )

सुहृद्भिर् आप्तैर् असकृद्-विचारितं

स्वयं हि बुद्ध्या प्रविचारिताश्रयम्
करोति कार्यं खलु यः बुद्धिमान्

एव लक्ष्म्या यशसां भाजनम् ११५

suhṛdbhir āptair asakṛd-vicāritaṃ

svayaṃ hi buddhyā pravicāritāśrayam |
karoti kāryaṃ khalu yaḥ sa buddhimān

sa eva lakṣmyā yaśasāṃ ca bhājanam ||3.115 ||

A person who does a thing only after repeated discussions with friends and well-wishers, and himself carefully considered its propriety with his own intelligence, will always be successful and prosperous.

After these reflections the crow also left  the place. 

We are now back with Sthirajeevin, the wise old minister talking to Megha verna, the crow king. 

बहु-बुद्धि-समायुक्ताः सुविज्ञाना बलोत्कटान्
शक्ता वञ्चयितुं धूर्ता ब्राह्मणं छागलद् इव ११६

bahu-buddhi-samāyuktāḥ suvijñānā balotkaṭān |
śaktā vañcayituṃ dhūrtā brāhmaṇaṃ chāgalad iva || 3.116 ||

The wicked, who are very intelligent, and experts in the art of deception, are capable of deceiving anyone, like they cheated the Brahmin of his goat.
