SUBHSHITHANI:431
The story of the rabbit and the sparrow continues:

प्रत्यक्षं यस्य यद् भुक्तं क्षेत्राद्यं दश वत्सरान्
तत्र भुक्तिः प्रमाणं स्याद् साक्षी नाक्षराणि वा ९४

pratyakṣaṃ yasya yad bhuktaṃ kṣetrādyaṃ daśa vatsarān |
tatra bhuktiḥ pramāṇaṃ syād na sākṣī nākṣarāṇi vā || 3.94 ||

मानुषाणाम् अयं न्यायो मुनिभिः परिकीर्तितः
तिरश्चां विहङ्गानां यावद् एव समाश्रयः ९५

mānuṣāṇām ayaṃ nyāyo munibhiḥ parikīrtitaḥ |
tiraścāṃ ca vihaṅgānāṃ yāvad eva samāśrayaḥ || 3.95 ||(Yugmam)

To the knowledge of the neighbor, if a person enjoys the benefits of staying and using various yields thereof for ten years, that itself is proof of ownership. No further proof is required in the form of documents or witnesses.(3.94)This law applies to men , as stated by great sages; in the case of animals and birds ownership lasts so long as they are in possession of a thing.(3.95)

अनित्यानि शरीराणि विभवो नैव शाश्वतः
नित्यं संनिहितो मृत्युः कर्तव्यो धर्म-संग्रहः ९६

anityāni śarīrāṇi vibhavo naiva śāśvataḥ |
nityaṃ saṃnihito mṛtyuḥ kartavyo dharma-saṃgrahaḥ || 3.96 ||

The bodies are not permanent, nor the wealth is everlasting;  death is always nearing, so let all your acts be such as can be accumulated as dharma.

यस्य धर्म-विहीनानि दिनान्य् आयान्ति यान्ति
लोहकार-भस्त्रेव श्वसन्न् अपि जीवति ९७

yasya dharma-vihīnāni dināny āyānti yānti ca |
sa lohakāra-bhastreva śvasann api na jīvati || 3.97 ||

For whom the days come and go with out his doing any good deeds , his life is similar to the black smith’s bellows ; just breathes but no life.

नाच्छादयति कौपीनं दंश-मशकापहम्
शुनः-पुच्छम् इव व्यर्थं पाण्डित्यं धर्म-वर्जितम् ९८

nācchādayati kaupīnaṃ na daṃśa-maśakāpaham |
śunaḥ-puccham iva vyarthaṃ pāṇḍityaṃ dharma-varjitam || 3.98 ||

It does not cover the private parts, nor does it useful in driving away the mosquitoes; the scholarship of a person who does not follow the moral code is much like the dog’s tail.

पुलाका इव धान्येषु पूतिका इव् पक्षिषु
मशका इव मर्त्येषु येषां धर्मो कारणम् ९९
pulākā iva dhānyeṣu pūtikā iv pakṣiṣu |
maśakā iva martyeṣu yeṣāṃ dharmo na kāraṇam || 3.99 ||
’Like chaff among the grains and gnats among the birds are those among men, with whom Dharma is not the motive force.’
श्रेयः पुष्प-फलं वृक्षाद् दध्नः श्रेयो घृतं स्मृतम्

श्रेयस् तैलं पुण्याकाच् छ्रेयान् धर्मस् तु मानुषात् १००

śreyaḥ puṣpa-phalaṃ vṛkṣād dadhnaḥ śreyo ghṛtaṃ smṛtam |
śreyas tailaṃ ca puṇyākāc chreyān dharmas tu mānuṣāt || 3.100 ||

The flowers and fruits are better than the tree, better than curd is butter, better than oil-cake is oil itself; similarly, morality is superior to the man himself.

सृष्टा मूत्र-पुरीषार्थम् आहाराय केवलम्
धर्म-हीनाः परार्थाय पुरुषाः पशवो यथा १०१

sṛṣṭā mūtra-purīṣārtham āhārāya ca kevalam |
dharma-hīnāḥ parārthāya puruṣāḥ paśavo yathā || 3.101 ||

Men who do not follow moral code are created like animals, for the use of others, merely evacuating the bladder and swallowing food.

  1. Learning and work with no link to the sustaining ruler with his laws makes man animal. Today's picks are eloquent and loud. Falls on deaf ears!
