SUBHASHITHANI:425
Prajeevin is continuing with his suggestion:
mahān
apy ekajo vṛkṣaḥ balavān supratiṣṭhitaḥ |
prasahya iva
vātena śakyo dharṣayituṃ yataḥ || 3.53 ||
atha ye
saṃhatā vṛkṣā sarvataḥ supratiṣṭhitāḥ |
te na raudrānilenāpi hanyante hy eka-saṃśrayāt || 3.54 ||
(The
meaning of these three slokas should be seen together)
Since even a strong
and deep rooted tree, standing alone, can be uprooted by a strong wind, but
the trees which grow in a mass and firmly rooted are not uprooted even by
violent winds for they stand together in one place; so enemies consider a man who
is alone and unassisted, though strong, can be vanquished easily and even kill
him. (3.53,3.54,3.55)
Prajeevin concluded his advice by recommending 'Asanam'-staying together in one place and wait for the enemy to make the move.
The king then called another minister by name Chiranjeevin and asked for his opinion. Chiranjevin suggested adopting "Samaasraya"- to seek help from others.
asahāyaḥ
samartho 'pi tejasvī kiṃ kariṣyati |
nirvāte jvalito vahniḥ svayam eva praśāmyati ||3.56 ||
Devoid of any assistance,
what can even a strong man do? Blazing fire extinguishes itself in the absence of air.
saṅgatiḥ
śreyasī puṃsāṃ sva-pakṣe ca viśeṣataḥ |
tuṣair api paribhraṣṭā na prarohanti taṇḍulāḥ || 3.57 ||
Man needs friends, and people whom he can call his allies. For, without
the husk, even rice seeds cannot be used for planting.
sa eva dīpa-nāśāya kṛśe kasyāsti sauhṛdam || 3.58 ||
When the forest burns, the wind is there to assist it. The same wind extinguishes a small lamp or flame. Who holds friendship with the weak?
saṅghātavān
yathā veṇur niviḍair veṇubhir vṛtaḥ |
na śakyeta samucchettuṃ durbalo 'pi yathā nṛpaḥ ||3. 59 ||
It is not easy to cut a
bamboo which is in a cluster, thickly surrounded by other bamboos; so, a king
who is surrounded by many friends cannot be destroyed even though weak.
mahājanasya
samparkaḥ kasya nonnati-kārakaḥ |
padma-patra-sthitaṃ toyaṃ dhatte muktā-phala-śriyam ||3. 60 ||
What height can not be reached by the association with the great? The water droplet on top of a lotus
leaf shines like a pearl.
