One day he came across a young female pigeon. She fell in to his trap and He threw it mercilessly into his cage.

atha krishnā dishah sarvā vanasthasyābhavan ghanaihi |
vātavrishtishcha makati kshayakāla evābhavat || 3.140 ||
Suddenly, dark clouds appeared in all directions, and it started raining heavily, while the hunter was still in the forest. It became very windy more like at the time of pralaya.
tataḥ sa trasta-hṛdayaḥ kampamāno muhur muhuḥ |
anveṣayan paritrāṇam āsasāda vanaspatim || 3.141 ||
The hunter started trembling, shivering again and again in the cold and started searching for a shelter and arrived at a big tree.

tasyāhaṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptaḥ sa paritrātu mām iti |
śītena bhidyamānaṃ ca kṣudhayā gata-cetanam || 3.143 ||

As he was resting, the skies cleared and twinkling stars appeared. The hunter prayed thus: “Whoever stays in this tree, I have sought his refuge. Let him protect me. I am suffering from biting cold and about to faint due to hunger.”

atha tasya taroḥ skandhe kapotaḥ suciroṣitaḥ |
bhāryā-virahitas tiṣṭhan vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ || 3.144 ||
There was a pigeon in the tree’s cavity, who was stayin
g there for a long time; he was grieving and crying feeling the long absence of his wife.

vāta-varṣo mahān āsīn na cāgacchati me priyā |
tayā virahitaṃ hy etac chūnyam adya gṛhaṃ mama || 3.145 ||
There has been heavy wind and torrential rain and my wife has not yet returned; without her presence the home looks void and empty.

pativratā pati-prāṇā patyuḥ priya-hite ratā |
yasya syād īdṛśī bhāryā dhanyaḥ sa puruṣo bhuvi || 3.146 ||
He is a very fortunate man in this world whose wife is devoted and virtuous, loves him more than her own life, and concerned about his welfare all the time.

na gṛhaṃ gṛham ity āhur gṛhiṇī gṛham ucyate |
gṛhaṃ tu gṛhiṇī-hīnam araṇya-sadṛśaṃ matam || 3.147 ||
A house is not a house in the absence of a wife; without her it is as good as a forest.

If his wife be eminently virtuous, what does that man not possess? If she be without worth, what does he possess
?
