KAKOLUKIYAM-PTKU31

 SUBHASHITHANI:448

After Raktaksha left, Sthirajeevin thought the time has come to destroy the owl kingdom, and went back to Meghavarna and informed him that it is time to strike.

śīghra-kṛtyeṣu kāryeṣu vilambayati yo naraḥ |
tat kṛtyaṃ devatās tasya kopād vighnanty asaṃśayam || 3.222 ||
When an urgent job to be carried out is delayed by a man, even the god’s feel angry and create obstacles in his path; there is no doubt about it.

yasya yasya hi kāryasya phalitasya viśeṣataḥ |
kṣipram akriyamāṇasya kālaḥ pibati tat-phalam ||3.223 ||

When an action, particularly that which is about bear fruit, is not  carried out at once, time saps its essence. ( ie The exercise will become futile)

Soon, the crows went with fire sticks in their beaks and dropped it in front of the owl's fortress. Thus, the owls were completely destroyed. Then Meghavarna enquired Stirajeevin about his stay at the enemies camp.

vara-magnau pradīpte tu prapātaḥ puṇya-karmaṇām |
na cārijana-saṃsargo muhūrtam api sevitaḥ || 3.224 ||

It is better for wise men to fall in to blazing fire than to be in the company of their enemies even though it be for a short period.

kāryasyāpekṣayā bhuktaṃ viṣam apy amṛtāyate |
sarveṣāṃ prāṇināṃ yatra nātra kāryā vicāraṇā || 3.225 ||

With the idea of achieving one’s goal if one takes even poison it acts like a nectar; in such cases all beings should without any hesitation embrace it.

upanata-bhaye yo yo mārgo hitārtha-karo bhavet-

sa sa nipuṇayā buddhyā sevyo mahān kṛpaṇo 'pi vā |
karikara-nibhau jyāghātā kau mahāstra-viśāradau

 valaya-racitau strīvad bāhū kṛtau na kirīṭinā || 3.226 ||

When faced with difficult time, one should accept those methods which will be beneficial to him; and with tact execute it even if it involves noble or mean role. With arms like the trunks of elephants, with battle hardened calloused hands, skilled to wield heavenly bow, the mighty Arjuna, did he not wear bangles like a woman when need arose?

śaktenāpi satā janena viduṣā kālāntarāpekṣiṇā

vastavyaṃ khalu vākya-vajra-viṣame kṣudre'pi pāpe jane |
darvī-vyagra-kareṇa dhūma-malinenāyāsa-yukte ca

 bhīmenātibalena matsya-bhavane kiṃ noṣitaṃ sūdavat || 3.227 ||

However strong and capable one may be, during testing times, a wise man should wait for an opportune time. He should be tolerant to wicked lords and their adamant speech. Did not the mighty Bheema live as a cook in the Matsya kingdom and worked hard in dark and smoky kitchens of the palace?

yad vā tad vā viṣama-patitaḥ sādhu vā garhitaṃ vā

 kālāpekṣī hṛdaya-nihitaṃ buddhimān karma kuryāt |
kiṃ gāṇḍīva-sphurad-uru-guṇāsphālana-krūra-pāṇir

 nāsīl līlā-naṭana-vilasan mekhalī savyasācī || 3.228 ||

When faced with adverse circumstances, a wise man should whole heartedly accept any act, noble or contemptible, and wait for favourable time. Did not the mighty Arjuna, with calloused hands from twanging divine bow Gaandeeva, danced effeminately and saw his tinkling girdle shine.

    1. No translation can ever bring the bhava of the original completely. Happy to note the transition is reasonably acceptable. Regards VNM
