KAKOLUKIYAM-PTKU32

 SUBHASHITHANI:449

Sthirajeevin is continuing with his reply as to why he was willing to undergo difficulties at the enemy camp.

siddhiṃ prārthayatā janena viduṣā tejo nigṛhya svakaṃ

sattvotsāhavatāpi daiva-vidhiṣu sthairyaṃ prakārya kramāt |
devendra-draviṇeśvarāntaka-samair apy anvito bhrātṛbhiḥ

kiṃ kliṣṭaḥ suciraṃ virāṭa-bhavane śrīmān na dharmātmajaḥ || 3.229 ||

A wise man, who is desirous of success in his endeavour, should conceal his blazing spirit, enterprise and enthusiasm, and watching his steps carefully must endure what fate has in store for him. In spite of being endowed with brothers as great as Indra, Kubera and Yama, didn’t Dharma putra put up for long the sufferings and serve in Virata kingdom?

rūpābhijana-sampanno mādrī-putrau balānvitau |
gokarma-rakṣā-vyāpāre virāṭa-preṣyatāṃ gatau || 3.230 ||
Endowed with personality, noble birth and strength the two sons of Maadri, chose to become servants of Virata king, taking care of the stable and cattle yard.

rūpeṇāpratimena yauvana-guṇaiḥ śreṣṭhe kule janmanā

kāntyā śrīr iva yātra sāpi vidaśāṃ kāla-kramād āgatā |
sairandhrīti sa-garvitaṃ yuvatibhiḥ sākṣepam ākhyātayā

draupadyā nanu matsya-rāja-bhavane gruṣṭaṃ na kiṃ candanam || 3.231 ||

With unmatched beauty, youthful features, noble birth, charming like goddess Lakshmi herself, Draupadi due to bad turn of events, had to endure miserable conditions. Did she not take the sneering of haughty maidens calling her by the name of Sairandhree and spent time grinding sandalwood at Matsya king’s palace?

arito 'bhyāgato bhṛtyo duṣṭas tat-saṅga-tat-paraḥ |
apasarpa-sadharmatvān nityodvegī ca dūṣitaḥ || 3.232 ||

It is ruinous to trust someone who comes as a deserter from the enemy camp ; such persons should be chased away as a spy and as one who is disenchanted and corrupt.

āsane śayane yāne pāna-bhojana-vastuṣu |o
dṛṣṭvāntaraṃ pramatteṣu praharanty arayo 'riṣu || 3.233 ||

Enemies strike at their foes when they observe them to be relaxed while sitting, or when lying down, or marching or while engaged in taking their drink or food.

tasmāt sarva-prayatnena trivarga-nilayaṃ budhaḥ |
ātmānam ādṛto rakṣet pramādād dhi vinaśyati || 3.234 ||

Therefore, one should take all efforts to protect one self, which is the abode of dharma, artha and kaama. Heedlessness will lead to one’s destruction.

 SRI KRISHNAYA THUBHYAM NAMAH
