This sloka is from the’ Garuda panchaasat ’  stotra, which is  couched in the grand sragdhara metre (21 syllables to a quarter), is in praise of Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu and also the ensign on His banner. Garuda is celebrated as Vedaatma or embodiment of the Vedas. It was Garuda that gave upadesa of Hayagriva mantra to Desika atop the hill in Tiruvahindrapuram and hence out of gratitude Desika must have sung this hymn.

MEANING OF THE SLOKA:

May we be protected by Garuda, who wears the Adisesha, the divine couch of the lord of vaikunta on his left as a bangle, wears vasuki as yagyopaveetha, wears takshaka as a girdle-knot, adorns his chest with the necklace of Karkotaka, sports Padma and Mahapadma in the right and left ears as earrings,  respectively, adorns the head- crown with Sankhapala, and holds Gulika on the right hand as a bangle.

  • ADISESH - LEFT HAND BANGLE
  • VASUKI -  YAGYOPAVEETHAM  ( SACRED THREAD )
  • THAKSHAKA – GIRDLE-KNOT
  • KARKOTAKA-  NECKLACE
  • PADMA- RIGHT EARRING
  • MAHAPADMA- LEFT EARRING
  • SANKHAPALA- HEAD-CROWN
  • GULIKA- RIGHT HAND BANGLE
