HAPPINESS - SUKHAM ( सुखम् )

SUBHASHITHAM : 105

नास्ति विद्या समं चक्षु नास्ति सत्य समं तपः
नास्ति राग समं दुःखम् नास्ति त्याग समं सुखम्

There is no greater power of vision than  education.
There is no penance greater than  truth.
There is no greater pain as that caused by excessive  desire.
There is no act that gives more happiness than sacrifice.

कस्यैकान्तं सुखम् उपनतं,  दु:खम् एकान्ततो वा।
नीचैर् गच्छति उपरि च,  दशा चक्रनेमिक्रमेण॥
Kasyaikaantam sukham upanatam, Dukham ekaantato vaa I
Neechair gachchati upari cha , dashaa chakranemikramena II
Who has only experienced constant happiness or constant sorrows? Situations in life are similar to a point on the moving wheel which goes up and down regularly.
सर्वं परवशं दु:खं सर्वम्  आत्मवशं सुखम्।
एतद् विद्यात् समासेन  लक्षणं सुखदु:खयो:॥
Sarvam paravasam dukham sarvam atma vasam sukham I
Etad vidhyaat samaasena lakshanam sukha dukhayoh II
Dependence on others is always painful ,  and one who depends on himself there is pleasure everywhere . In short, these are the characteristics of pleasure and pain.
ये मूढतमाः लोके ये बुद्धेः परं गताः
ते एव सुखम् एधन्ते मध्यमः क्लिश्यते जनः

Ye cha moodatamaah loke ye cha bhuddeh param gataah I
Te eva sukham edhante madhyamah klishyate janah II
People who are dumb and those who are extremely intelligent are the only two kinds of people that are happy in this world. The dumb are ignorant of the problems they face, and the intelligent know how to get out of the troubles... the people in between suffer from by cognizance of the problem and not knowing the solution.
सुखार्थी त्यजते विद्यां  विद्यार्थी त्यजते सुखम्।
सुखार्थिन: कुतो विद्या कुतो  विद्यार्थिन: सुखम्॥
Sukhaarthi tyajate vidhyaam vidhyaarti tyajate sukham I
Sukhaartinah kuto viddhyaa kuto vidhyaarthinah sukham II
Those who are after comforts don’t strain for knowledge, Those who are keen on acquiring knowledge forget comfort. How can those who are  after comfort gain knowledge? Where is cosy life for those who are after knowledge?
दिवसेनैव तत् कुर्याद् येन रात्रौ सुखं वसेत्।
यावज्जीवं तत्कुर्याद् येन प्रेत्य सुखं वसेत्॥
Divasenaiva tat kuryaad yena raathrau sukham vaset I
Yaavat jeevam cha tat kuryaad yena pretya sukham vaset II
During the day do those which will help you to be happy during the night. Similarly act in such way during the entire life which paves way for a happy life after death.
सुखदु:खे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ |
ततो युद्धाय युज्यस्व नैवं पापमवाप्स्यसि || 38||Bhagavad Gita
sukha-duḥkhe same kṛitvā lābhālābhau jayājayau
tato yuddhāya yujyasva naivaṁ pāpam avāpsyasi
BG 2.38: Fight for the sake of duty, treating alike happiness and distress, loss and gain, victory and defeat. Fulfilling your responsibility in this way, you will never incur sin.
