khalasya sādhorviparītametat jñānāya dānāya ca rakṣaṇāya ॥
खलः सर्षपमात्राणि परच्छिद्राणि पश्यति ।
आत्मनो बिल्वमात्राणि पश्यन्नपि न पश्यति ।।
Khalh sarshapamaatraani paracchidraani pashyati.
Aatmano Bilvamaatraani pashyannapi na pashyati.
Aatmano Bilvamaatraani pashyannapi na pashyati.
Wicked
persons find faults in other persons so minuscule like a mustard seed , whereas
they willfully ignore their own faults as big as the 'bilva' fruit.
विद्या विवादाय धनं
मदाय शक्तिः
परेषां परिपीडनाय ।
खलस्य साधोर्विपरीतमेतत् ज्ञानाय दानाय
च रक्षणाय ॥
vidyā vivādāya dhanaṃ madāya śaktiḥ pareṣāṃ paripīḍanāya ।khalasya sādhorviparītametat jñānāya dānāya ca rakṣaṇāya ॥
For the evil-men Knowledge is for
argument, wealth is for insolence, strength is for tormenting others.Whereas, for the noble it is the opposite ,who use the same for knowledge, charity and
protecting (respectively).
दुर्जनस्य च सर्पस्य
वरं सर्पो न
दुर्जनः ।
सर्पो दंशति कालेन दुर्जनस्तु पदे पदे ॥ - चाणक्य नीति
सर्पो दंशति कालेन दुर्जनस्तु पदे पदे ॥ - चाणक्य नीति
Durjanasya cha sarpasya varam sarpo na durjanah I Sarpo damshati kaalena durjanastu pade pade II Chanakya niti
Between an
evildoer and a snake, the snake is a blessing, not the evildoer. A snake
strikes in due course of time, (whereas) an evildoer (will strike) at every
step.
उपकारो हि नीचानां
अपकारो हि जायते ।
पयः पानं भुजङ्गानां केवलं विषवर्धनम् ॥
पयः पानं भुजङ्गानां केवलं विषवर्धनम् ॥
Upakaaro hi neechaanaam apakaaro hi jaayate I Payah paanam bhujangaanaam kevalam vishavardhanam II
Benefaction
to the evil only bears misdeeds. Feeding milk to a snake only aids in
increasing (its) poison.
दुर्जनः प्रियवादीति नैतद्विश्वासकारणम् ।
मधु तिष्ठति जिह्वाग्रे हृदये तु हलाहलम् ॥ - हितोपदेश
मधु तिष्ठति जिह्वाग्रे हृदये तु हलाहलम् ॥ - हितोपदेश
Durjanah privaadeeti naitad visvaasa kaaranam I Madhu
tishtati jihvagre hrudaye tu halaahalam IIHitopadesa
Because an evil-doer speaks nicely,
it shouldn't be the reason for trust. There is honey at the tip of the tongue,
but poison at heart.
मा दद्यात् खलसङ्घेषु कल्पनामधुरागिरः।
यथा वानरहस्तेषु कोमलाः कुसुमस्रजः॥
mā dadyāt khalasaṅgheṣu kalpanāmadhurāgiraḥ|
yathā vānarahasteṣu komalāḥ kusumasrajaḥ||
Do not speak sweet words unto wicked people;
[it is the same as] a garland of soft flowers in the hands of a monkey!
यथा वानरहस्तेषु कोमलाः कुसुमस्रजः॥
mā dadyāt khalasaṅgheṣu kalpanāmadhurāgiraḥ|
yathā vānarahasteṣu komalāḥ kusumasrajaḥ||
Do not speak sweet words unto wicked people;
[it is the same as] a garland of soft flowers in the hands of a monkey!
व्यालं बालमृणालतन्तुभिरसौ रोद्धुं समुज्जृम्भते
छेत्तुं वज्रमणिं शिरीषकुसुमप्रान्तेन सन्नह्यति।
माधुर्यं मधुबिन्दुना रचयितुं क्षाराम्बुधेरीहते
नेतुं वञ्छति यः खलान् पथि सतां सूक्तैः सुधास्यन्दिभिः॥
vyālaṁ bālamṛṇālatantubhirasau roddhuṁ samujjṛmbhate
chettuṁ vajramaṇiṁ śirīṣakusumaprāntena sannahyati|
mādhuryaṁ madhubindunā racayituṁ kṣārāmbudherīhate
netuṁ vañchati yaḥ khalān pathi satāṁ sūktaiḥ sudhāsyandibhiḥ||
To control an elephant with a lotus stem, or trying to cut a diamond with the delicate petals of the shirIsha flower, or sweetening the salty ocean with a drop of honey — these are equivalent to want to reform the wicked with nectar sweet advice.

One must not have any association with
a wicked man — friendship or hatred. When hot, coal burns, [and even] when
cold, it blackens the hand!”

मणिना भूषितः सर्पः किम् असौ न भयङ्करः॥

maṇinā bhūṣitaḥ sarpaḥ kim asau na bhayaṅkaraḥ||

"One should stay away from
the wicked, even if they are endowed with knowledge. Is the snake any less
fearful, when decorated with gems?"
