INTRINSIC NATURE -SVABHAVAH- (स्वभावः , प्रकृतिः)

SUBHASHITHANI:133

उशना वेद यच्छास्त्रं यच्च वेद बृहस्पतिः ।
स्वभावेनैव तच्छास्त्रं स्त्रीबुद्धौ सुप्रतिष्ठितम् ॥Chanakya niti

All the wisdom and intelligence attributed to Shukracharya and Bruhaspati is already present naturally in a woman.

वित्ते त्यागः, क्षमा शक्तौ दुःखे दैन्यविहीनता ।
निर्दम्भता सदाचारे स्वभावोऽयं महात्मनाम् ॥

The nature of the noble is: liberality when wealthy, forgiveness in spite of strength,

 non-affliction although in misery, absence of  pride in comportment.

स्वभावो नोपदेशेन शक्यते कर्तुमन्यथा ।

सुतप्तमपि पानीयं पुनर्गच्छति शीतताम् ॥ - पञ्चतन्त्र
svabhāvo nopadeśena śakyate kartumanyathā ।
sutaptamapi pānīyaṃ punargacchati śītatām ॥

It is not possible to change the intrinsic nature (of a person) through advice.

 Even after being boiled intensely, water goes back (to being) cold.
நுண்ணிய நூல்பல கற்பினும் மற்றுந்தன்
உண்மை யறிவே மிகும். Kural-373
Although (a man) may study the most subtle treatises, the knowledge which fate has decreed to him will still prevail.

उपकर्तुं प्रियं वक्तुं कर्तुं स्नेहमनुत्तमं ।

 सज्जनानां स्वभावोऽयं केनेन्दुः शिशिरीकृतः ।।

It is the innate nature of noble men to help those in need, to say soothing words, and show the hand of friendship. The moon's rays are pleasant inherently.

स्वभावसुंदरं वस्तु न संस्कारमपेक्षते ।
मुक्तारत्नस्य शाणाश्मघर्षणं नोपयुज्यते ॥

That which is inherently beautiful does not expect to be polished by customs

 and propriety. A pearl does not need scrubbing against a stone to make it shine.

स्वभावाद्यस्य नैवार्ति-र्लोकवद् व्यवहारिणः।
महाहृद इवाक्षोभ्यो गतक्लेशः स शोभते॥

He who by his very nature feels no unhappiness in his daily life like worldly people, remains undisturbed like a great lake, all sorrow gone.॥

स्वभावेनैव यो योगी सुखं भोगं न वाञ्छति ।

 यदृच्छालाभसन्तुष्टं ह्यवधूतं नमाम्यहम् ॥ ९॥

A yogi by nature does not look for pleasure or happiness. He is satisfied with what  ever is obtained by providence.  To such an avadhuta I pray. 

स्वेदितो मर्दितश्चैव रज्जुभिः परिवेष्टितः  ।

मुक्तो द्वादशभिर्वर्षैः श्वपुच्छः प्रकृतिं गतः  ॥

svedito marditashcaiva rajjubhih pariveshtitah  |

mukto dvaadashabhirvarshaih shvapucchah prakrtim gatah  ||

A dog's tail goes back to it's original form even after twelve years of effort to straighten it by hot water fomentation, massaging with ointments, and tying with ropes .

सदृशं चेष्टते स्वस्या: प्रकृतेर्ज्ञानवानपि |
प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि निग्रह: किं करिष्यति || 3.33|| Bhagavad Gita

sadṛiśhaṁ cheṣhṭate svasyāḥ prakṛiter jñānavān api
prakṛitiṁ yānti bhūtāni nigrahaḥ kiṁ kariṣhyati

Even wise people act according to their natures, for all living beings are propelled by their natural tendencies. What will one gain by repression?

WISE MEN - PANDITA BUDDHAYAH- (पण्डितबुद्धयः)

SUBHASHITHAM:132

न यत्रास्ति गतिर्वायो रश्मीनां च विवस्वतः।
तत्रापि प्रविशत्याशु बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतां सदा ॥

A wise man's wisdom can penetrate to such depths where even wind can not flow or can light reach.
यथा शक्ति चिकीर्षन्ति यथा शक्ति च कुर्वते I
न किञ्चिद् अवमन्यन्ते नराः पण्डित बुद्धयः II Vidura niti
Those are wise men who aspire to do as much as lies in their power, do act to the best of their ability and do not look down upon anything as menial.

नाप्राप्यमभिवांछन्ति नष्टं नेच्छन्ति शोचितुम् ।

आपत्सु च न मुह्यन्ति नराः पण्डितबुद्धयः ॥ Vidura niti
Wise men will not long for the things that can not be attained. They do not grieve for what is lost. They are not distracted when they are in trouble.
बंधुस्त्रीभृत्यवर्गस्य बुद्धेः सत्वस्य चात्मनः ।
आपन्निकषपाषाणे नरो जानाति सारताम् ॥ Hitopadesa
It is only during the times of trouble that people's support to you is tested - like gold on touch stone. This applies to relative, wife, servants and one's own wisdom and courage.

न तच्छस्त्रैः न नागेंद्रैर्न हयैः न पदातिभिः ।
कार्यं संसिद्धिमभ्येति यथा बुद्ध्या प्रसाधितम् ॥

One can be achieve a lot by using wisdom. The same is not true about weapons, elephants, horses and cavalry .

तमःपरिवृतं वेश्म यथा दीपेन दीप्यते ।
तथा बुद्धिप्रदीपेन शक्य आत्मा निरीक्षितुम् ॥

Darkness in our homes is removed by lamps lighting other lamps. Just like that, knowledge will let us search our souls in the darkness of ignorance.

तमःपरिवृतं वेश्म यथा दीपेन दीप्यते ।
तथा बुद्धिप्रदीपेन शक्य आत्मा निरीक्षितुम् ॥

गतेऽपि वयसि ग्राह्या विद्या सर्वात्मना बुधैः ।
यद्यपि स्यान्न फलदा सुलभा सान्यजन्मनि ॥

gate'pi vayasi graahyaa vidyaa sarvaatmanaa budhaih |
yadyapi syaanna phaladaa sulabhaa saanyajanmani ||

Wise men continue to learn from every one and get wiser even at a very old age. It is not a problem if their new wisdom does not give any results immediately. It will at least make it easier in the next birth.

किं तया क्रियते धेन्वा या न सूते न दुग्धदा ।
कोऽर्थः पुत्रेण जातेन यो न विद्वान्न भक्तिमान् ॥ - पञ्चतन्त्र
kiṃ tayā kriyate dhenvā yā na sūte na dugdhadā ।
ko'rthaḥ putreṇa jātena yo na vidvānna bhaktimān ॥
What shall you do with a cow that neither milks nor bears a calf? What is the use of an offspring who is neither learned nor devoted?

आरभन्तेऽल्पमेवाज्ञाः कार्यं व्यग्रा भवन्ति च ।
महारम्भाः कृतधियः तिष्ठन्ति च निराकुलाः ॥ - शिशुपालवध

Even when embarking upon a small job, the unwise get restless and anxious. (Whereas) the wise take up huge tasks and remain unperturbed!

SRI KRISHNAYA THUBHYAM NAMAH

INTELLIGENCE-3- BUDDHI-DHEEH-PRAGYA- ( बुद्धिः-धी: -प्रज्ञा)

SUBHASHITHAM:131
आत्मानं रथिनं विद्धि शरीरं रथमेव च ।
बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रग्रहमेव च ॥ - कठोपनिषत्
ātmānaṃ rathinaṃ viddhi śarīraṃ rathameva ca ।
buddhiṃ tu sārathiṃ viddhi manaḥ pragrahameva ca ॥

Know thyself as the traveller and body as the chariot. Perceive intellect as the charioteer and mind as the reins.

प्रामाण्यबुद्धिः स्तोत्रेषु देवताबुद्धिरात्मनि ।

कीटबुद्धिर्मनुष्येषु नूतनायाः श्रियः फलम् ॥ 

Praamanya buddhih stotreshu devataa buddhiraatmani I

Keeta buddhir manushyeshu nootanaayaah shriyah phalam II

Authoritativeness in one's own praises; perceiving oneself as the Almighty; 

discerning other humans as insects - these are the results of newfound wealth. 

गन्धः सुवर्णे फलमिक्षुदण्डे     नाकारि पुष्पं खलु चन्दनस्य ।
विद्वान् धनाढ्यश्च नृपश्चिरायुः   धातुः पुरा कोऽपि न बुद्धिदोऽभूत् ॥ - चाणक्य नीति

Fragrance in gold; fruit in sugarcane; big flowers too in sandalwood; an educated who is rich; a king who lives forever - (alas!) there were no counselors for the creator earlier!

कर्मायत्तं फलं पुंसां बुद्धिः कर्मानुसारिणी ।
तथापि सुधियाश्चऽऽर्याः सुविचार्यैव कुर्वते ॥ - चाण्क्य नीति

karmāyattaṃ phalaṃ puṃsāṃ buddhiḥ karmānusāriṇī ।
tathāpi sudhiyāśca''ryāḥ suvicāryaiva kurvate ॥

Beings attain the results per their actions; (and) actions conform to the intellect.

 Therefore, the intelligent noble execute after reflection.

सत्यानुसारिणी लक्ष्मीः कीर्तिस्त्यागानुसारिणी ।
अभ्याससारिणी विद्या बुद्धिः कर्मानुसारिणी ॥

Wealth follows truthfulness; fame follows liberality; knowledge follows practice; intellect follows implementation (action).

ञ्चित् युक्तो रिपुं सेवते बुद्धिपूर्वम् ।
न विग्रहं रोचयते बलस्थैः काले च यो विक्रमते स धीरः ॥
sudurbalaṃ nāvajānāti kiñcit yukto ripuṃ sevate buddhipūrvam ।
na vigrahaṃ rocayate balasthaiḥ kāle ca yo vikramate sa dhīraḥ ॥ - viduranīti

He who does not show even a little contempt towards the weak;

 handles the enemies with discern; steers clear from having a conflict with

 the stronger and demonstrates valour - is brave.

दारिद्र्यनाशनं दानं शीलं दुर्गतिनाशनम् ।
अज्ञाननाशिनी प्रज्ञा भावना भयनाशिनी ॥ - चाणक्य नीति

dāridryanāśanaṃ dānaṃ śīlaṃ durgatināśanam ।
ajñānanāśinī prajñā bhāvanā bhayanāśinī ॥

Giving quells poverty, integrity dispels bad times, 

awareness dismisses ignorance, contemplation dissipates fear.

अग्निर्देवो द्विजातीनां मुनीनां हृदि दैवतम् ।
प्रतिमा स्वल्पबुद्धीनां सर्वत्र समदर्शिनः ॥
agnirdevo dvijātīnāṃ munīnāṃ hṛdi daivatam ।
pratimā svalpabuddhīnāṃ sarvatra samadarśinaḥ ॥

For the twice-born , fire is God; for the ascetics, the Lord is in their hearts; for those with little insight, it is in the statue; for those with equanimity, He is everywhere!
