SUBHASHITHAM:121
Dharmagyo dharmakartaa cha sadaa dharmaparaayanah I
Tatvebhyah sarva shaastrartha deshako gururuchyate II
One who is well-versed in righteousness
( Dharma ) , who performs dharma, always inclined towards dharma, and
explains all the nuances of shastraas to his disciples is called a ‘guru’.

II Chanakya niti
Janitaa chopanetaacha yascha vidhyaam prayachchati I
Annadaata bhayatraataa panchaite guravah smrutaah II
“One who gives birth, one who performs rituals and cultural
ceremonies, one who teaches and educates, one who gives food and one who
protects from danger — These are considered the five gurus of a man”

Vinaa gurubhyo gunaneerdhibhyo jaanaati tatvam na vichakshanopi I
Aakarnadeergaayita lochanopi deepam vinaa pasyati na andhakaare II
Even if one is very intelligent and scholarly ,he will not be able to
grasp the truth without a guru ,who is an ocean of virtues. Like, even though a
man may have an excellent vision , he will not be able to see in darkness
without a lamp.
Dakshinaamurthy stothram
Salutations to Dakshinamurthy the Guru,
Who is the teacher of all the world |
Who is the doctor for all diseases
And who is the storehouse of all knowledge ||

Salutations to Dakshinamurthy the Guru,
Who is the teacher of all the world |
Who is the doctor for all diseases
And who is the storehouse of all knowledge ||

Tyajet
dharmam dayaheenam vidhyaa heenam gurum tyajet I
Tyajet
krodhamukheem bhaaryam nisnehaan bandhavan tyajet II
Distance
your- self from dharma which does not
preach compassion, reject gurus who are devoid of knowledge( vidhya ), avoid a
wife who always speaks harsh words, and get rid-off relations who are
unfriendly.

Gurorapyava liptasya kaaryaa kaaryam ajaanatah I
Utpattham pratipannasya kaaryam bhavati shaashanam II
A guru, who knows what
should be done and what should be not done , if he goes astray and transgresses ‘dharma’,
his shishyaas or close aides should advise him appropriately in private ( Gurum
rahasi bodhayet ).
Neecham sayyaasanam chaasya sarvadaa guru sannidau I
Gurostu chakshur vishaye na yatheshtaasano bhavet II
Neecham sayyaasanam chaasya sarvadaa guru sannidau I
Gurostu chakshur vishaye na yatheshtaasano bhavet II
When guru is seated ,the shishyas should sit in a lower place. When guru is around , shishyas should never remain seated.
Bahavo guravo loke shishya vitta apahaarakaah I
Bahavo guravo loke shishya vitta apahaarakaah I
Kkacchitu tatra drushyante shishyachitta apahaarakah
II
There are many teachers in the world who extract
money from their students , but there are very few teachers who steal the mind
of the student.
Guroryatra parivaado
nindaa vaapi pravartate I
Karnau tatra vidhatavyo
gantavyam vaa tato anyatah II
Where something bad
about guru is being said you should try
to refute it. If it is not possible don’t listen to such words. Even if that is
not possible leave that place without delay.
