MORAL CONDUCT-DHARMAH- (धर्मः)

SUBHASHITHAM:111

धर्म एव हतो हन्ति धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः ।
तस्माद्धर्मो न हन्तव्यो मा नो धर्मो हतोऽवधीत् ॥-Manu Smriti
Dharma Eva Hato Hanti Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha! Tasmat Dharmo Na Hantavyo Maa no Dharmo Hatho avaadeet. 
If we transgress Dharma, we will not attain spiritual welfare or Shreyas. If we protect Dharma (by adhering to it), Dharma protects us. Hence under no circumstances, should anyone swerve from Dharma.

यं पालयसि धर्मं त्वं धृत्या च नियमेन च।
स वै राघवशार्दूल धर्मस्त्वामभिरक्षतु।।2.25.3।। Ramayana
Yam paalayasi dharmam tvam dhrutyaa cha niyamena cha ISa vai Raghava saardula dharmastvaam abhirakshatu II
The duty which you are carrying out with courage and self -discipline, O tiger among the descendants of Raghu, that alone will  protect you
.यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत |
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् || 7||Bhagavad Gita
yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata
abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛijāmyaham

BG 4.7: Whenever there is a decline in righteousness and an increase in unrighteousness, O Arjuna, at that time I manifest myself on earth. 
परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् |
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे || 8||
paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśhāya cha duṣhkṛitām
dharma-sansthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge
BG 4.8: To protect the righteous, to annihilate the wicked, and to reestablish the principles of dharma I appear on this earth, age after age. 
आचारः परमो धर्म आचारः परमं तपः।
आचारः परमं ज्ञानमाचरात् किं न साध्यते॥
Practicing( the moral code ) is the highest dharma (sacred duty), greatest penance, superior knowledge. What is that which can't be achieved through practicing.
वृद्धा न ते ये न वदन्ति धर्मम् । धर्मो न वै यत्र च नास्ति सत्यम्II
सत्यं न तद्यच्छलनानुविद्धम् ॥
It is not an assembly where there are no elders. They are not elders if they do not teach Dharma. It is not Dharma if it does not contain truth. It is not truth at all if it is charged with deceit.
वित्तेन रक्ष्यते धर्मो विद्या योगेन रक्ष्यते ।
मृदुना रक्ष्यते भूपः सस्त्रिया रक्ष्यते गृहम् ॥
Vitena rakshyate dharmo vidhyaa yogena rakshyate I 
mRRitunaa bhuupaH sastriiyaa rakshyate gRRiham' II
Dharma' is protected by money, education by practice, king is protected by politeness, home by good women.
आहार-निद्रा-भय-मैथुनश्च सामान्यम् एतद्पशुभिर्नराणाम्।
धर्मो हि तेषाम् अधिको विशेषः धर्मेण हीनः पशुभिः समानः॥
āhāra-nidrā-bhaya-maithunaśca sāmānyam etadpaśubhirnarāṇām|
dharmo hi teṣām adhiko viśeṣaḥ dharmeṇa hīnaḥ paśubhiḥ samānaḥ||
"Food, sleep, fear, producing off springs — in all these humans compare with animals; It is only 'dharma' or righteousness that is unique to them, without which, they are no better than animals."
चला लक्ष्मीश्चला: प्राणाश्चलं जीवित-यौवनम् ।
चलाचले च संसारे धर्म एको हि निश्चलः ॥
chalaa lakshmiishchalaaH praaNaashchala.n jiivita-yauvanamchalaachale cha sa.nsaare dharma eko hi nishchalaH
Wealth comes and goes, life and youth goes from the living, in this world of coming and going, 'dharma' alone is unchanging.
धर्मेण हन्यते व्याधिः हन्यन्ते वै तथा ग्रहाः ।
धर्मेण हन्यते शत्रुः यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥
Dharmena hanyate vyaadih hanyante vai tatha grahaah I
Dharmena hanyate shatruh yatho dharmas tato jayah II
Diseases are eliminated by following dharma, effects of the planets are nullified, enemies are destroyed by dharma, where there is dharma there is always victory.
