TEACHER-GURU - ( गुरुः)

SUBHASHITHAM: 120
Prerakah soochakaschaiva vaachako darsakastatha I
Shikshako badhakaschaiva shadete guravah smrutah II
Those  who perform any of  the following acts are spoken of as gurus:
  1. One who motivates the disciple in the spiritual journey ( Prerakah )
  2. One who helps and provides guidance in the path (soochakah )
  3. One who explains and corrects mistakes while on the path(vaachakah )
  4. One who observes and points out directions to further progress(darshakah )
  5. One who preaches and makes the disciple eligible for reaching the goal.( shikshakah )
  6. One who makes the disciple realize ( experience ) the ultimate truth. ( bhodakah)
Poorne tataake trushitah sadaiva  bhute api gehe shudhitah sa moodah I
Kalpadrume satyapi vai daridrah  gurvaadiyoge api hi yah pramaadee II
One who remains ignorant even after having an excellent guru is like a fool, who remains thirsty inspite of being near a water body , who remains hungry at home inspite of huge stock of grains, one who is under a kalpa vruksha ( wish yielding tree ) and still a poor.
Vidvatvam,Dakshataa,Shilam,Sankraanti, Anushilanam IShikshakasya gunaah sapta sachetastvam prasannataa IIScholarly, dexterous, virtuous, generous, intelligent, always in meditative mood, and always happy - these are the qualities of a guru.
Dugdhena dhenuh kusumena valli  sheelena bhaaryaa kamalena toyam IGurum vinaa bhaati na chaiva sishyah  shamena vidhyaa nagaree janena II
A sishya without a guru is like, a cow bereft of milk, a creeper without flowers, wife without moral conduct, a pond without lotuses, knowledge without controlled mind, city without people.
Ekamapyaksharam yastu guruh shishye nivedayet I
Prithivyaam naasti tad dravyam yaddatvaa hynrunee bhavet II
Even a single  word given by a guru to sishyaa , there is nothing in this world giving which one can repay the debt to the guru
Gukarastvandhakaarastu rukaarah teja ucchayate I
Andhakaara nirodhatvaat gururityabhideeyate II
The letter ‘gu’ represents darkness ( ignorance ) and the letter ‘ru’ represents brightness ( wisdom) . Therefore the word ‘guru’ represents dispelling of darkness by brightness ( ignorance by knowledge ).
1 Guru ashtakam
śarīram surūpam tathā vā kalatraḿ yaśaścāru citram dhanam merutulyam gurorańghripadme ḿanaścenna lagnaḿ tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ
One’s physique may be superb, one’s consort likewise, one’s reputation resplendent and renowned, and one’s riches as high as Mount Meru; yet if one’s mind be not centred upon the lotus feet of the Guru, what then, what then, what then?
What is the use of talking about crores of scriptures. It is a fact that without 'Gurukrupa' mental peace  is impossible.
SRI KRISHNAYA THUBHYAM NAMAH
